Position Summary

At Stony Brook Medicine, our Registered Nurses are critical members of the team who diagnose and treat responses to actual or potential health problems by means of nursing methods and techniques such as case finding, health teaching and counseling. Our valued team members provide care supportive to our patients' health and well-being, while adhering to a medical regimen.

The Teaching and Research Nurse III functions as the nurse leader of a unit on a given shift. In addition, this position may provide individualized direct patient care utilizing the skills and knowledge relevant to the care of such patients. This position provides supervision to the T&R Nurse I, T&R Nurse II, and ancillary personnel.


Duties of the T & R Ctr Nurse III - Urology Prostate Cancer Program Nurse may include the following but are not limited to:

  • Planning and arranging community prostate cancer screening programs. This will include obtaining site, physician and staff commitments, maintaining phlebotomy supplies, drawing psa blood specimens and processing them accordingly.

  • Entering data from the screenings to the program data base. Merging information from screenings to patient result letters. Provides written &/or telephone follow up to patients.

  • Provides community outreach through participation in health fairs, lectures &/or seminars.

  • Assist in creating programs to highlight Stony Brook Urology services including genetic testing, treatment options for elevated psa and prostate cancer.

  • Assist patients with prostate cancer in understanding their diagnosis and treatment through support groups &/or lectures.

  • Provides nursing services within the Urology departmental locations.

The selected candidate will be required to periodically work evening and weekend shifts in order to support the department.


Working Conditions:


Working conditions may involve exposure to infectious disease, blood, body fluids and/or tissue as well as other unpleasant elements such as accidents, injuries and illness. May be exposed to and be required to handle varying unpredictable, emergency and crisis situations. Occasionally subjected to irregular hours and pressure due to multiple calls and inquiries. This position is classified by OSHA as Category 1.


Qualifications


Required Qualifications: Possession of or eligibility for a license to practice as a registered nurse in New York State and two years of post-licensure acute care clinical nursing experience. A Bachelor's Degree in Nursing may be substituted for one year of the experience.

Preferred Qualifications: Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing with one year oncology nursing experience, oncology nurse certification.

Physical Demands


Must be physically capable of safely executing the duties and responsibilities required of the position.

Physical demands may include:

  • Prolonged, extensive, or considerable standing/walking, lifting, positioning, pushing and/or transferring of patients.
  • Lifting supplies/equipment
  • Considerable reaching, stooping, bending, kneeling and crouching.
  • Special Notes: Stony Brook Medicine is a smoke free environment. Smoking is strictly prohibited anywhere on campus, including parking lots and outdoor areas on the premises.

    All Hospital positions are subject to changes in pass days and shifts as necessary. This position may require the wearing of respiratory protection, which may prohibit the wearing of facial hair.


    The selected candidate must successfully clear a background investigation. Prior to start date, the selected candidate must meet the following requirements: Successfully complete pre-employment physical examination and obtain medical clearance from Stony Brook Medicine's Employee Health Services (The hiring department will be responsible for any fee incurred for examination), submit (3) written references, and provide a copy of any required New York State license(s)/certificate(s).
