Associate Research Physicist (Computational)

Job description

Requisition # 2018-9021
Department PPPL Theory
Category Research and Laboratory
Full-Time / Part-Time Full-Time
Application Deadline

Overview

PPPL has a postdoctoral position open in the area of computational physics, to play a key role in the development of the Gkeyll code, which uses advanced discontinuous Galerkin algorithms to simulate plasma turbulence in tokamak fusion devices in a 5-dimensional phase space. We seek an energetic applicant who wants to be at the forefront of high-performance computing with applications to fusion energy research. This work supports DOE Scientific Discovery through Advanced Computing (SciDAC) projects. This is an entry-level position at rank of Associate Research Physicist.

Responsibilities

The successful applicant will work closely with the Gkeyll team to add new physics capabilities for modeling tokamak turbulence and improve the code efficiency. This will involve extensive coding in C++ and higher-level scripting languages, optimization on parallel supercomputers, and working on improving physics capabilities, such as general geometry. It will also involve using this code to study the physics of turbulence in tokamaks and working with a team of developers and users.

Qualifications

Applicant should have a Ph.D. in plasma physics, astrophysics, applied mathematics, or a closely related discipline with experience in computational fluid dynamics or other computational physics areas. Experience with advanced CFD algorithms, C++, and modern computing tools is a plus. English communication and writing skills are required and so is being able to work in a team.
