Director of Honors Program

Academic Affairs is seeking to hire a Director of the University of Wisconsin¿Eau Claire Honors Program. This is a full-time, faculty position reporting to a Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs. Anticipated start date is July 1, 2019 (negotiable).

The Director of the UW-Eau Claire Honors Program is the primary academic leader responsible for leading the campus toward the attainment of the honors program mission.

To provide highly motivated, high potential students with a challenging and supportive learning community that allows them to develop their distinctive abilities, and to create a foundation for high-value intellectual, professional, and personal achievements in future settings.

The director is charged with oversight for programming and curriculum of the honors program and with providing the necessary vision for ongoing program changes and improvement, and for enhancing honors students’ capacity for critical inquiry, independent learning, and leadership. This position will:

  • Recruit students in the University Honors Program, in collaboration with the Office of Admissions and the UW-Eau Claire Foundation.
  • Facilitate and supervise the holistic admissions process, including recruitment and training of application readers, contributing to individual admissions decisions, and reviewing enrollment data to ensure a sustainable program size and the recruitment and retention of a diverse honors student body.
  • Recruit qualified instructors from among current UW-Eau Claire faculty and staff, emeriti faculty, and community members to teach honors classes and provide professional development as warranted.
  • Maintain an honors curriculum that facilitates timely attainment of the University’s liberal education learning goals and that accommodates variety among honors students in major and minor requirements and prior credits earned.
  • Facilitate and supervise the development of honors contracts for individualized student learning.
  • Solicit honors course proposals and secure course approval by the University’s Liberal Education Committee (ULEC).
  • Consult with college deans, department chairs, and academic program directors to coordinate honors course offerings and to maintain/expand departmental honors options.
  • Teach courses in the honors program, which may include honors seminars and courses in the director’s academic discipline.
  • Develop and maintain opportunities for undergraduate research; study abroad and other immersion experiences; and internships.
  • Collaborate, supervise, and evaluate honors program employees as specified by university-wide policies.
  • Represent the honors program at public events and sustain contacts with prospective students and their parents/guardians, university faculty and staff, academic deans, and appropriate university directors.
  • Manage the budget of the honors program and seek appropriate efficiencies in program spending.
  • Coordinate co-curricular programming for students in the university honors program, including special events such as the fall and spring honors graduation ceremonies.
  • Work with UW-Eau Claire housing professionals to coordinate and support the University Honors Living/Learning Community.
  • Advise current and prospective honors students regarding university honors program requirements, courses, and programs.
  • Work with the Advising, Retention and Career Center to assist advisors who work with honors program student.
  • Assist honors students who plan to apply for competitive scholarships such as the Rhodes Scholarship, the Marshall Scholarship, and the Fulbright Program.
  • Coordinate instructional staff participation in assessment of Liberal Education Learning Outcomes in keeping with ULEC policies.
  • Conduct program-level assessment of the University Honors Program in promoting student learning. This includes assessment of selection criteria, curriculum, and other programming.
  • Facilitate the work of the University Honors Council, including the review of honors scholarship applications, routine business, and strategic planning moving toward an honors college in a manner consistent with the University’s Academic Master Plan.
  • Represent UW-Eau Claire at national and regional honors council meetings; investigate and integrate best practices in honors education through participation in national and regional meetings.
  • Work with Academic Affairs to provide reports, verbally and in writing, on the state of the University Honors Program.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

  • Have a passion for working with honors students.
  • Be experienced in educating. students who have demonstrated excellence in their studies and educational endeavors
  • Enjoy working in a high-energy, fast-paced, professional environment effectively collaborating across multiple disciplines to better serve students.
  • Have expertise in data collection, analysis, and reporting.
  • Possess the ability to work independently yet foster camaraderie among faculty and staff
  • Demonstrated ability to manage budgets, coordinate class offerings and workshops, and maintain communication with a variety of offices across a campus.
  • Have experience working in an honors college.
Required Qualifications:
  • Credentials to qualify for tenure in a UW-Eau Claire academic department or program.
  • Earned doctorate from a regionally accredited institution.
  • A passion for and experience in working with high-ability students in a college or university setting.
  • A demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusivity.
  • Excellent interpersonal and public speaking skills.
  • Must possess strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and ability to follow through with commitments to university administration, faculty, staff, and students.
