About the Position

The Senior Director of Faculty Affairs provides San Jos State University with strong, experienced, collegial leadership in the development and administration of faculty personnel procedures as determined by the policies of the University, the California State University, appropriate statutes and applicable CBAs. The Senior Director is charged with inspiring confidence and trust among faculty, administrators, and staff personnel, while discharging the duties and responsibilities of the position.

The Senior Director will serve as custodian of the official Personnel Action Files for Unit 3 and Unit 11 employees and provide oversight of the processes and application of policies that support the recruitment, appointment, professional development, evaluation, retention, tenure & promotion of the faculty as well as the appointment and evaluation of Unit 11 employees. In addition, the Senior Director will manage professional staff in the implementation, delivery and maintenance of these processes.

This is a position in the CSU - Management Personnel Plan (MPP), and serves at the pleasure of the President. This position will require adherence to University compliance training such as: Conflict of Interest and Ethics, AB 1825 Sexual Harassment Prevention, Information Security, and Injury and Illness Prevention Program. The person hired for this position may be required to complete an outside employment disclosure statement in accordance with Title V of the California Code of Regulations.

Education and Experience

-Terminal Degree appropriate to the applicant's academic field of expertise.
-At least seven (7) years of experience in higher education that includes demonstrated successful administrative experience.
-Demonstrated successful university teaching experience and a record of research, scholarly and creative activity sufficient to merit appointment as a tenured professor.
-Advanced degree with 3-5 years of experience in Faculty Affairs administration may substitute for education and experience requirements.

Preferred Qualifications

-Increasingly responsible professional leadership or management experience in an academic environment.
-Experience managing faculty recruitment processes.
-Experience managing retention, tenure and promotion processes for faculty.
-Experience in the California State University system.
-Experience in academic personnel administration, policies, and procedures in a collective bargaining environment.
-Demonstrated successful university teaching experience and a record of research, scholarly and creative activity sufficient to merit appointment as a tenured full professor.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

-Thorough knowledge of faculty processes and procedures.
-Knowledge of personnel processes and procedures.
-Strong knowledge of collective bargaining environment and procedures.
-Knowledge of or ability to quickly gain knowledge of CSU Executive Orders, CSU and University policies, and CSU Collective Bargaining Agreements for faculty and academic student employees.
-Knowledge of adult learning, as well as training strategies and delivery methods.
-Knowledge of diversity initiatives, especially as related to recruitment of faculty.
-Strong management and interpersonal skills.
-Strong oral, written communication and presentation skills.
-Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw conclusions.
-Ability to provide solutions to complex problems with sensitivity, tact, and diplomacy.
-Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from faculty, Department Chairs, Program Directors, Deans, the Provost, Vice Presidents, and the President.
-Ability to communicate effectively with faculty, administrators and staff both orally and in writing.
-Ability to demonstrate awareness and sensitivity to the educational and professional goals of a multicultural faculty and student population.
-Ability to set strategic direction.
-Ability to think critically and make strategic recommendations.
-Ability to listen critically and interpret information.
