The Polsky Center brings the power of ideas in the laboratory, classroom and community to the world. Through education, resources, and programs, the Polsky Center commercializes discoveries, partners with companies, and attracts venture capital. The Polsky Center runs a top-ranked business accelerator, the Edward L. Kaplan, '71, New Venture Challenge, which has helped launch more than 200 companies worldwide that have gone on to achieve more than $9 billion in value and raised over $600 million in funding. For more than two decades, the Polsky Center has pioneered leading entrepreneurship education coursework at Chicago Booth with a strong focus on “learn by doing.” It operates a 34,000 square-foot, multi-disciplinary co-working space called the Polsky Exchange; an Innovation Fund that invests in early-stage ventures; and a state-of-the-art Fabrication Lab for prototyping new products. Finally, the Polsky Center manages the University of Chicago's technology transfer function that manages all University-based intellectual property originating from faculty research and discoveries, which can be licensed to industry partners and investors.

Job Information

Job Summary:

As an integral part of the Polsky Center's technology transfer team, the patent coordinator is a support staff member who handles all aspects of the invention disclosure management and reporting process. This individual manages all patent and license related docketing related to an intellectual property portfolio. This person assists with patent prosecution and license agreement activity within the portfolio to support commercialization efforts. Be responsible for meeting and monitoring the satisfaction of government compliance for intellectual property within the assigned portfolio.

Responsibilities:

  • Review and manage patent-related correspondence. Create and maintain the patent docket, correspond with law firms, and coordinate with the technology transfer team and licensees to ensure that deadlines are met. Review and approve all legal bills.
  • Manage the ongoing administration of license agreements: monitor status of agreements, create and maintain license docket, maintain files, correspond with licensees to monitor compliance with agreements. Monitor cash flow from licensees for amount and timing.
  • Identify, review, and manage all government and private sponsor compliance requirements and timelines through iEdison.gov and other federal and non-federal websites.
  • Enter and manage invention disclosures, guarantee compliance with University requirements, document appropriate information in University databases. Coordinate and document disclosure elections and releases.
  • Assist technology transfer team with marketing campaigns, mailings, databases, and related correspondence.
  • Assist technology transfer team by establishing and maintaining direct and independent relationships with legal counsel, licensees, and colleagues
  • Participate in special projects to continuously improve business processes throughout the department
  • Maintain and produce enterprise-wide reports as requested.


Competencies:
  • Understanding of university technology transfer
  • Experience with legal documents, specifically intellectual property. A background as a paralegal or experience in similar roles likely to be useful.
  • Excellent computer skills; knowledge of Inteum a bonus
  • Attention to detail with clear understanding of how to prioritize workload appropriately
  • Excellent interpersonal, verbal and written communications and analytical skills
  • Ability to work well under pressure and manage multi-task projects required
  • Excellent customer service and relationship skills
  • Ability to work independently with a high degree of initiative
  • Ability to work as part of a team
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality

Education, Experience, or Certifications:

Education:
  • Bachelor's Degree required
  • Advanced Degree preferred


Experience:
  • Experience in university technology transfer preferred
  • At least 2 years of related work experience required
