To advance and support the health, wellness, and learning of the Susquehanna University student. Assess and respond to common illnesses, implement a general plan of care, evaluate progress, and collaborate with health providers and university personnel to promote positive student outcomes. Must have a strong medical knowledge base, be able to relate well to young adults; offer a sensitive, non-judgmental attitude and necessary guidance toward health promotion and health education.
Devises, implements, and evaluates plans of care utilizing sound clinical judgment based on assessment of the physical, psychological, emotional, societal and environmental needs of the student.
Provides education about diagnosis, treatment of medical condition, and appropriate preventive measures as needed.
Offers continuity of care as needed, based on original and/or ongoing assessment of student's status.
Assesses real and/or potential health hazards relating to current health status, including analysis of risky behaviors that cause impact on health status.
Educates and encourages students to recognize and change behavior that has a negative impact on their health.
Assists patients to assume responsibility for the prevention of illness and the promotion, maintenance and restoration of health.
Works collaboratively with the entire staff at SU Health Center, seeking consultation with nurse practitioners and/or physicians when clinical care exceeds the nurse's scope of practice as established by the Pennsylvania State Board of Nursing.
Conducts physical assessment, medical history and treatment (including limited prescriptive medicines) under established health protocols, standing orders, policies and procedures, and the direction of medical providers.
Documents in electronic charts utilizing clear, concise language in a timely fashion.
Consults, refers, and collaborates with other disciplines involved in the delivery of total student care within the SU community (i.e. Disabilities Office, Counseling Center, Campus Ministry, Residential Life, Athletic Trainer, etc.) and the greater community; this can be done with assistance of the NP/MD.
Acts as a resource to the campus community, including participation in staff outreach and off-site health care programs
Demonstrates evidence of professional growth by maintaining professional certification through continuing education.
Responsible to maintain confidentiality of all patients.
Responsible for adherence to OSHA, CLIA, FERPA, HIPAA and other state and federal regulatory guidelines.
Participates in professional Quality Assurance program at the SU health center, including annual peer review.
Provides support to parents concerned with their child's illness, while respecting the confidentiality of the student.
Conduct inventory of supplies and place orders when necessary, ensuring timely arrival of supplies. This includes stocking and issuing of all on site and trip first aid kits, as well as the Health Center clinic rooms.
Assess and triage illnesses and injuries utilizing the Susquehanna University Health Center standing orders and medical procedure manual.
Maintain a current documentation of problems, diagnostic and treatment for each student.
Correspond and collaborate with all departments and with the community to ensure holistic care for students i.e. counseling center.
Participate in SU related health and wellness educational events.
Performs point-of-care CLIA-waived laboratory tests: rapid Strep, urine culture, urine pregnancy, finger stick glucose monitoring.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities
Possess good physical assessment skills. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills. Skilled using a personal computer, calculator, copier, fax, Excel, Word, Publisher, Power Point, Outlook, DataTel, and Laser Jet Printers.
Normal medical office environment, heavy lifting may be required.
Graduate of an accredited nursing program, Basic Life Support (BLS) certification and current RN license in the State of Pennsylvania are required.
Knowledge and experience in critical care, emergency medicine or outpatient health center is preferred. Experience with EPIC (electronic health record) a plus.
