Occupational Summary

This position is within the Duke Cancer Institute's [DCI] Oncology Clinical Research Unit [CRU] and the Adult Bone Marrow Transplant Clinical Research Program [BMT]. The position reports operationally through the CRU; research activities are overseen by the Principal Investigator/s [PIs].
The position manages the day-to-day operations of an assigned research portfolio including Duke and external multi-site studies, grant writing and the supervision of research staff. Responsible for management, study coordination, costs, regulatory, study quality and reporting.

Responsibilities

Leadership - 40% of Effort
Represent the research program at the institutional level and with internal and external collaborators.
Establish and assign the activities of multiple teams to accomplish study goals. Oversee staff who manage day-to-day operations. Maintain training requirements and proactively ensure staff comply with training requirements. Ensure staff follow SOPs and regulatory requirements.
Serve as an expert mentor to staff and an expert resource to colleagues and collaborators.

Operations, Portfolio, Study and Site Management -35 % of Effort
Effectively manage the portfolio to realize the program's long and short term goals; continuously evaluate effectiveness and implement changes. Coordinate all study activities and assign staff appropriately.
Collaborate and lead study design, implementation and close. Implement innovative solutions to maximize recruitment and correct findings. Ensure financial viability of the study during design. Create strategies to enhance cultural diversity and cultural competency in the design and conduct of clinical research. Determine and implement solutions to accomplish recruitment and retention milestones.
Create, optimize, and oversee systems to collect, prepare, process, ship research specimens and maintain inventory.

Lead and oversee monitoring and quality assurance. Responsible for quality assurance implementation, systems and solutions. Responsible for maintenance of regulatory documents. Oversee study teams' maintenance of Delegation of Authority Logs and training of key personnel on study specific duties.
Oversee the collection of adverse event [AE] information. Liaise with contact for final outcome of the AE.
Coordinate core services and agreements.

In coordination with the DCI Finance Team develop, negotiate, and oversee budgets; assign patient costs and establish financial monitoring systems and reports. Ensure financial charges and expenses route in a timely manner. Collaborate with sponsor and finance team to troubleshoot and resolve issues proactively.

Data - 10% of Effort

Design data flow plans for data capture, storage, management, quality, and analysis; implement across multiple studies. Oversee the creation and use of queries, summaries, and reports. Recognize trends; escalate as appropriate and solve problems.

Communication - 10% of Effort
Communicate regularly with staff, collaborators and colleagues. Establish and maintain communications to accomplish program objectives and ensure successful research partnerships.

Ethics - 5% of Effort
Ensure the study design includes safeguards for ethical conduct and protects vulnerable populations.
Serve as an expert resource for issues related to professional guidelines and code of ethics.

Possess thorough understanding of intellectual property rights, inventions, patents, and technologies.

Education

1.Completion of a bachelor's degree plus a minimum of four years of research experience. 2.Completion of a master's degree plus a minimum of two years of research experience.

Research experience referred. CCRP prefered.

Skills
Excellent computer skills. Managerial experience. Database experience.
Can easily use computing software and web-based applications (e.g., Microsoft Office products and the electronic medical record).
