Working Hours: Working hours for this position consist of a 7½ hour period (between the hours of 8:00 am and 5:00 pm) exclusive of a ½ hour or 1 hour lunch. These hours to be agreed upon between the supervisor and employee at the onset of employment. In this position, the employee may be required to work two evenings per week (Tuesday and/or Wednesday) in a 7½ hour shift ending at 7:30pm. The employee may be required to work additional evening or weekend hours. The employee has the option to work these additional hours, in addition to or in lieu of regular hours.
NOTE: THIS IS A 100% PERKINS GRANT FUNDED POSITION.
Summary: The Assistive Technology/Educational Support Specialist position will report directly to the Director of Disability Services and work cooperatively as a member of the Student Affairs staff to provide support to students, especially those with disabilities. The AT/ESS will assist the Director of Disability Services in assuring that students eligible for disability support services are provided equal access to all college instruction and programs in accordance with ADAA law and sections 504/508 of the Rehabilitation Act. The AT/ESS will plan, develop, deliver and monitor comprehensive accommodations and services to meet the needs of students. This will include teaching students to utilize the adaptive technology that would be required by their individual student plan. This position will also assist the Director in developing and implementing programming to educate the campus community about legal guidelines for students with disabilities and how to provide equal access through accommodations.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Work cooperatively as a member of the Student Affairs staff, whose purpose is to provide support to students, especially students with disabilities.
- Assist the Director of Disability Services in assuring that students eligible for disability support services are provided equal access to all college instruction and programs in accordance with ADAA law and sections 504/508 of the Rehabilitation Act.
- Develop and manage communications regarding departmental activities for faculty, staff and students.
- Conduct intake interviews with students referred to the Perkins Program.
- Meet with students individually to review documentation and develop an individual student plan.
- Train students to use the adaptive technology required by their individual student plan.
- Plan, develop, and deliver comprehensive accommodations and services to meet the needs of students.
- Monitor and track student referrals and their progress.
- Maintain contact notes and all other required Perkins program paperwork.
- Meet regularly with program students, RACC faculty, staff and administration and community agency representatives to ensure the success and improvement of the students referred to the Disability Services Office as well as the Perkins Program.
- Conduct placement testing and provide advising for students with disabilities.
- Plan for, assist in and attend student transition-related events.
- Assist program staff with transition workshops and orientations.
- Assist the Director in developing and implementing programming to educate the campus community about legal guidelines for students with disabilities and how to provide equal access through accommodations.
- Serve as an advocate for students with disabilities and support instructional faculty in transitioning students to the college environment.
- Attend and participate in Behavioral Intervention Team (BIT) hearing appeal meetings and related BIT activities as needed.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
Supervisory Responsibilities: This job has no supervisory responsibilities.

Education and Experience:
1. Master’s degree in special education, social work, developmental education, or related field is required.
2. Minimum of two years’ experience in higher education and experience with students with disabilities is required.
3. Knowledge of ADAA law and sections 504/508 of the Rehabilitation Act.
4. Must have at least an introductory-level understanding of assistive technology and alternative media services and an interest in teaching students to use them.
- Academic advising experience at the college level
- Bilingual Spanish/English
Language Skills: Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of students, faculty, staff, outside groups and the general public.
Mathematical Skills: Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent.
Reasoning Ability: Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
Computer Skills: To perform this job successfully, an individual should have the ability to use Internet software; Spreadsheet software and Word Processing software.
