The American Sign Language Program at the University of Virginia invites applications for a three-year (9-month, non-tenure track, with chance of renewal) Lecturer or Assistant Professor, General Faculty, position in ASL and Linguistics/Comparative Linguistics. The anticipated start date is August 25, 2019.
The teaching load for this position is three courses per semester. Candidates for this position should be prepared to teach Linguistics/Comparative Linguistics courses as well as ASL language courses at beginning, intermediate, and/or advanced levels. They will also have the opportunity to design new courses related to their general fields of interest. Appropriate university, professional, and community service will also be expected.
M.A. required, Ph.D. preferred, in the areas of ASL or ASL/Comparative Linguistics, but applicants with degrees in Anthropology, Education, Deaf Studies, Sign Language Interpreting, or other related fields are welcome to apply. The successful candidate must have native or near-native proficiency in ASL. Three years or more of teaching at the university level is preferred as is ASLTA certification. The successful candidate should have extensive experience with the Deaf community and will be expected to bring a level of enthusiasm, excitement, and innovation to teaching that further enhances our growing, rigorous ASL Program (which includes World Language requirement satisfaction and a Minor in ASL and Deaf Culture).
