The University of Virginia is searching for collaborative and dynamic candidates for an Employee Relations (ER) Consultant position. An ER Consultant is a strategic, consultative partner for client areas across the Academic Division and Health System.

As an integral member of the Employee Relations Team, the ER Consultant reports directly to the Manager of Employee Relations and works with assigned business areas across the University. This role serves as a subject matter expert in the area of employee relations and the primary focus of this position is to: handle ER investigations; provide advice and counsel to HR professionals and managers on workplace issues regarding policy interpretation and application; and handle the progressive disciplinary process that includes informal levels of counseling, formal discipline and the grievance procedure process.

A Bachelor's degree and at least four years of relevant experience is required. The successful candidate has experience handling complex ER cases and demonstrated work ethic, initiative, dedication to project completion, and passion for human resource management. Good judgment and conflict resolution and decision making skills are necessary, as is the ability to resolve complex problems and effectively communicate rationale to key stakeholders. A sensitivity to employee concerns and the ability to adapt to different, sometimes conflicting stakeholder needs is a must. The incumbent has a realistic/pragmatic approach to delivering services based on sound judgment - balancing the values, ER policies and laws under which we operate. Discretion, integrity and confidentiality are a must.

The ability to work effectively and autonomously with all levels within the organization, and maintain flexibility and adaptability is essential. The incumbent must be able to manage multiple projects and tasks while maintaining accuracy and attention to detail. The ability to work independently and as part of a team, and excellent verbal and written communication, organizational, time management, and facilitation skills are a must. A knowledge of relevant state and federal employment laws and governmental compliance requirements related to HR management and employment functions is essential. Working knowledge of Word, Excel and PowerPoint is required.

Preference will be given to candidates with a degree in a related field and over seven years of experience in an employee relations role and/or with the University. Priority will also be given to applications received by November 22, 2018.
