COMMUNICATIONS COORDINATOR

INTERDISCIPLINARY HEALTH SCIENCES INSTITUTE

UNIVERSITY OF ILLINOIS

The University of Illinois' Interdisciplinary Health Sciences Institute (IHSI), formed to catalyze, facilitate, enhance, and coordinate Health Sciences-related activities on campus and with our clinical partners, is seeking a Communications Coordinator. The incumbent in this position will coordinate communications activities that support programs and initiatives for the Interdisciplinary Health Sciences Institute, in close collaboration with the Director of Communications and Health Research Graphic Design Coordinator. This will include Implementing print and electronic communications and publicity efforts supporting advancement of programs, cores, community engagement, recruitment, research, and internal and external partnerships.

Major Duties and Responsibilities:

Create, edit, curate, and publish content for print publications, e-newsletters, websites, social media, and other digital media aligned with IHSI communications strategy.

Coordinate communications projects from concept development to final execution, focusing on clear communication and expectations among stakeholders, enforcing deadlines and staying within budget, problem-solving as needed, and offering recommendations to improve workflow and processes.

Publicize health sciences events, workshops, and other meetings by coordinating digital signs, announcements, event calendars, photography, and social media campaigns.

Identify, research, conduct interviews for, write, and publicize original stories, adhering to IHSI and University of Illinois journalism, branding, and media standards.

Support IHSI sponsored events, workshops, and other meetings by coordinating PowerPoint presentations, exhibit booths/tables, photography, and other media coverage.

Maintain email lists, adjust communications efforts for intended audiences, maintain and explore opportunities to improve communications to and among all IHSI audiences, including, but not limited to, IHSI staff, campus units, campus leadership, faculty, students, physicians, donors, clinical and corporate partners, community organizations and members, and news media.

Supervise student communications intern(s).

Other duties as assigned, including but not limited to:

  • Foster a culture of diversity and inclusion within the health sciences at Illinois
  • Educate and train other IHSI staff and serve as a resource for using communications tools, like webtools or content management systems
  • Recognize IHSI and IHSI staff achievements and milestones


Position Requirements and Qualifications:

Education:

Required: Bachelor's degree in communications, marketing, journalism, public relations, English, or related field.

Experience:

Required: Minimum of three years of professional level experience in communications, one of which was at an administrative level.

Preferred: Experience in a higher education or research setting. Experience communicating health-related research to a variety of audiences. Previous supervisory experience preferred.

Knowledge:

Preferred: Proficiency using a content management system or basic web development knowledge. Familiarity with Webtools. Demonstrated ability to interview subject-matter experts and photograph events.

Successful candidate will have excellent project management, writing, and editing skills. Strong interpersonal, professional, and organizational skills. Ability to work with minimal supervision in a dynamic team environment. Sound judgement, and well-developed problem-solving and decision-making skills. Attention to detail and writing style. Ability to work effectively and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment. Ability to build relationships, act professionally, and perform efficiently in a professional and diverse teamwork environment, consisting of multiple and changing priorities.

Proposed Start Date: As early as possible after closing date.

Salary: Commensurate with qualifications and experience.

Appointment Status: FLSA exempt, 100%-time Civil Service Business/Administrative Associate position, 12-month service basis. Eligible candidates will qualify for full University benefits package including vacation, sick, and personal days; health, life, dental insurance; and many other benefits.
