**This position is open only to internal candidates in the Police Department.**

The University of North Texas Police Department is a full-service law enforcement agency serving the University of North Texas (UNT) community, a 38,000 student public institution within the Dallas/Fort Worth region. The UNT Police Department is among only 7% of law enforcement agencies nationwide to have earned accreditation from the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies, Inc. (CALEA). The UNT Police Department is also accredited by the International Association of Campus Law Enforcement Administrators (IACLEA). This dual accreditation helps ensure that the University of North Texas Police Department operates in accordance with over 500 best practice standards to offer the UNT community the highest level of professional law enforcement.

Job Description
**This position is open only to internal candidates in the Police Department.**

The Police Department at the University of North Texas is seeking to hire a Police Sergeant to join our team. Responsibilities of the position include, but are not limited to:

* Supervising sworn police officers, security guards, and others engaged in the protection and safeguarding of human lives and personal and public property.
* Supervision and responsibility for on-the-job training and orientation of newly hired officers.
* Supervisory and/or administrative activities within a variety of police operations; including, patrol, criminal investigations, training, satellite locations, accreditation, or administration.

Minimum Qualifications
The successful candidate will possess an Associates Degree in relevant field and three years of experience as a commissioned Police Officer; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience. Active Peace Officer license from the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement (TCOLE) or ability to obtain within six months of employment.

The following knowledge, skills, and abilities are required:

* Thorough knowledge of traffic, civil and criminal law, city ordinances, and all University rules and regulations.
* Thorough knowledge of modern principles, practices, equipment, and techniques of police administration, organization, and operation.
* Ability to plan, lay out, direct, and coordinate the work of subordinates.
* Ability to understand and execute oral and written instructions.
* Ability to effectively communicate oral and written instructions to subordinates.
* Ability to effectively take command and act in a calm and effective manner in emergency and disaster situations.
* Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with subordinates, other law enforcement groups, and the general public.
* Ability to train others in enforcement, regulatory, and investigative methods and procedures.
* High degree of integrity, moral character, and personal behavior.
* Knowledge of safety and security precautions appropriate to work performed and work supervised.

Preferred Qualifications
The preferred candidate will possess the following additional qualifications:

* Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in a relevant field.
* TCOLE Intermediate Peace Officer Proficiency Certificate.
* TCOLE Instructor Proficiency Certificate.
