Primary Function of Organization Unit: The NC State College of Education leads the way in preparing professionals, conducting research, and engaging communities to improve educational outcomes for all learners across North Carolina, the nation and the world. With two-thirds of its faculty engaged in over 120 funded research projects, the college ranks No. 1 in education research productivity in North Carolina and in the Top 8 percent nationally among public colleges of education. Our faculty address society's most pressing educational challenges and convert their research to action and innovative solutions that transform teaching and learning environments across the lifespan, with particular strengths in improving technology-enhanced learning and teaching in STEM education and literacy; increasing diversity, equity and access in education; and innovating leadership development. The college is composed of three academic departments: Educational Leadership, Policy, and Human Development; Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics Education; and Teacher Education and Learning Sciences, with approximately 100 faculty members and 92 support and professional staff. The college's 1,700 undergraduate and graduate students study across 60-plus degree programs that deliver highly-engaged and personalized academic experiences that prepare them to lead in the field of education.
Essential Job Duties: The writer and editor will serve as the College of Education's lead writer, content producer, and editor about the college's research and scholarly activities. The person in this position will also work closely with the college's director of marketing and communication and leadership team, particularly the associate dean for research and innovation, to execute a research communications plan that positions the college as one of the leading research-driven public colleges of education in the nation and world. The person in the position must be able to write clear and compelling copy about research and scholarly activities, must have the ability to handle multiple projects simultaneously (often on tight deadlines), and must demonstrate a commitment to education research and to quality, accuracy, and storytelling. The writer and editor reports directly to the college's director of marketing and communication. Responsibilities include: - Conceptualize, research, write, and edit clear and compelling content about the college's research, publications, and scholarly activities for diverse audiences (including education leaders, legislators, and education professionals); for multiple platforms (including the college's website, digital communications, and print pieces); and in multiple formats (including profiles, features, news releases, lists, white papers, reports, case statements, and Alternative Story Forms) - Work closely with the college's director of marketing and communication (marcom) and the associate dean for research and innovation to amplify the relevance and impact of the college's research and scholarly activities to national audiences - Manage the college's digital platforms about research, scholarly activities, and innovation, including a research newsletter that's distributed nationally and a hub for professional educators - Work closely with the Friday Institute for Educational Innovation's senior communications manager and the college's marcom director to identify and develop stories about the work occurring in the college's Friday Institute regarding innovative research, policy, practice and digital-age teaching and learning initiatives - Work with the college's marcom team to elevate research communications, including conceptualizing graphics, videos, and/or other visual elements that will accompany content - Work with faculty and staff to review research-related content, negotiate edits and changes, and move approved content forward - Edit marcom team members' and leadership team members' materials as assigned - Proofread and copy edit the college's marcom materials to ensure materials align to AP style and are typo-free - As assigned, serve as a project manager on research communications-related initiatives, ensuring that the team is organized, on task, and meets deadlines - Work with the marcom team to develop research-related content ideas and to provide input on content development across the team - Provide strategic input into the college's annual and multi-year marcom plans and partner with the marcom team to champion the college to internal and external stakeholders - Work with the marcom team to monitor and analyze content performance and develop strategies to improve engagement with content, specifically as related to research communications - Develop and maintain effective relationships with the college's marcom team and provide excellent customer service to the college's stakeholders
Department Required Skills: - Strong writing skills that demonstrate an ability to write about research and translate the impact of research and scholarly activities to different audiences - High level of commitment to understanding the interests and concerns of the college's audiences that includes professional educators, elected officials, education researchers, and education leaders and officials - High attention to detail, accuracy, and quality control - Ability to prioritize projects, meet deadlines, and work in a fast-paced environment with constantly shifting priorities - Must be able to work both independently and collaboratively and keep internal stakeholders updated on projects - Must thrive in an environment with a constant feedback loop and high standards and that embraces ongoing learning and refinement - Experience with AP style
Preferred Experience, Skills, Training/Education: - Bachelor's degree in journalism, communications, English, or related field from an accredited college or university, and at least two years of writing and editing experience; OR High school diploma or equivalency and at least five years of writing and editing experience; or an equivalent combination of training and experience. - Familiarity with WordPress, Google Analytics, and G Suite. - Experience working at a magazine or newspaper and turning around clean, clear copy on deadline. - Understanding of effective SEO strategies. - A heart for education.
