Medical Laboratory Technologist

Primary Function of Organization Unit: The Histology Laboratory is one of three laboratory components of the College of Veterinary Medicine Diagnostic Services. This unit is responsible for the research, clinical and teaching histopathology needs of the CVM and other NCSU and regional contributors. This is a revenue generating service laboratory specializing in paraffin, frozen, immunohistochemistry, and plastic embedment histology.
Essential Job Duties: This position provides complex and specialized histology support for the CVM Histology Laboratory that includes: performing complex histology tasks, serving as a resource for a diverse population in the lab, and assisting with providing training to staff technicians, graduate students, staff and principal investigators on routine and specialist techniques. This is a revenue generating service laboratory specializing in paraffin, frozen, immunohistochemistry, enzyme histochemistry, in-situ hybridization and plastic embedment histology. Customers of this lab include; Veterinary Health Complex, NC State University researchers, public and private universities principal investigators, federal agencies and private enterprises.
Department Required Skills: - Ability to provide quality slides of all species of animals with a minimum of errors. - Knowledge of all safety regulations. - Microscopic identification of tissues and cell structure. - Knowledge of disease structure and pathology to allow interactions between staff and pathology faculty and researchers. - Knowledge of cross species staining vs "human staining" - Ability to productively collaborate with others on histology projects. - Work performance is detail oriented and precise. - Critical thinking in performance of journal reviews. - Knowledge of basic Immunology, Immunohistochemistry - paraffin and frozen, plastic embedment and animal histology multi-species. - Ability to lift up to 30 pounds frequently.
Preferred Experience, Skills, Training/Education: - Bachelor's degree in a Biological Science, Zoology or related field. - Knowledge of the anatomy of different species. - Experience with UVIS LABS system and associated web systems. - Safety training requirements at NC State University. - Critical thinking in performance of journal reviews.
Necessary Licenses and Certifications: - Must have or be eligible for histology certification by American Society of Clinical Pathology (ASCP) testing and registration. - Ability to maintain American Society of Clinical Pathology (ASCP) CEU certification requirements for Histologists.
