The Foothill-De Anza Community College District is currently accepting applications for the full-time, non-tenured (October 2018 - June 2020) faculty position of Counselor, Math Success Program, Foothill College.
DUTIES and RESPONSIBILITIES of the Position Include:
Reporting to the Dean of Counseling, the Math Success Program Counselor will assist with program implementation of the goals and objectives of the Math Performance Success (MPS). The program provides intensive student support services for underprepared students in mathematics. The candidate will provide counseling and advising services for students. Counselor will collaborate with the Director of the STEM Program and the MPS team at De Anza College, the Foothill Dean of PSME, math faculty, other counselors, and staff for the success of students and programs. The counselor will need to complete MPS training and attend weekly meetings at De Anza College with the MPS team. Candidate will assist with student/tutor recruitment and placement, will implement in and out of class counseling and advising services, will work closely with faculty to monitor student progress, and will assist with collecting data and reporting on the success of the programs.
The Math Success Program Counselor will provide Student Success and Support Program (SSSP) core services including orientation, educational planning, and counseling follow-up.
This position is not a mathematics position, but experience with supporting students in mathematics and related STEM disciplines is highly preferred.
Standard duties expected of all faculty include development and evaluation of curricula, maintaining scheduled office hours, attending department and division meetings, pursuing professional growth activities, service on district and/or college committees, and performing other duties consistent with the role of an instructor. Instructors also have the opportunity to participate in campus extra-curricular activities.
- Using counseling and advising to guide students towards their desired goals (ie. transfer or employment or job development) while monitoring consistent classroom progress.
- Identifying students experiencing academic difficulties in mathematics.
- Effective student recruitment, placement, and program orientation.
- Working in a closely integrated team of instructors, counselors, tutors, mentors, and other college services.
- Recruiting, scheduling, and evaluating student tutors.
- Establishing an effective rapport with students inside and outside of the classroom.
- Developing an education plan for each student in the math programs.
- Providing evidence on program success by collecting retention and success data to report to state agencies and campus and District administrators.
- Closely monitoring student progress through weekly meetings with faculty and staff.
- Providing academic counseling and advising to enable students to succeed.
- Integrating tutoring/mentoring concepts into the classroom environment.
- Establishing and maintaining relationships with other student service groups in program planning and organizing.
- Attending all program and division meetings and training sessions.
- Participating in on-going professional development training.

- Master's degree in counseling, rehabilitation counseling, clinical psychology, counseling psychology, guidance counseling, educational counseling, social work, or career development, marriage and family therapy, or marriage, family and child counseling OR the equivalent OR a Bachelor's degree in one of the above listed degrees AND a license as a Marriage and Family Therapist (MFT) is an alternative qualification for this discipline.
NOTE: Official Transcripts verifying qualifications will be REQUIRED prior to an offer of employment. Applicants who have international transcripts must obtain transcripts that are evaluated by an independent educational-equivalency evaluation company and obtain an English translation (if necessary). These services are to be done at the applicant's expense. Both Foothill De Anza CCD employees and external candidates must submit transcripts.
- Demonstrated knowledge and skills in providing counseling and career services to multi-ethnic and underrepresented students.
- Demonstrated knowledge and experience in providing academic, personal, career counseling to community college students, especially underprepared students.
- Ability to provide culturally relevant strategies for developing and teaching personal development, college success and/or career courses to underprepared students.
- Demonstrated experience in serving students with difficulties in STEM courses.
- Demonstrated experience in skills and strategies in effectively serving underrepresented students.
- Demonstrated experience in working closely and collaboratively with a team.
- Demonstrated strong communication, written, and interpersonal skills.
- Experience with counseling related technology, educational planning software, and social media.
- Experience working in a student success program.
- Knowledge of AB 705 policy and guidelines.

HIRING RANGE**: $62,772.00 - $103,094.00 annually plus benefits; actual placement is based on applicant's verified education and experience. NOTE: The salary advertised with this position is based on the 2017-2018 salary schedule. Effective July 1,2018 through June 30, 2019, the position will receive an additional temporary 5% increase. On July 1, 2019 salaries will revert to the 2017-2018 salary schedule unless another agreement is reached.
