The Department of Justice Studies at SJSU invites applications for a tenure track position at the rank of Assistant Professor.


Required Qualifications:

  • Doctorate with research and teaching expertise in forensic science as described herein
  • Scholarship linking forensic science with any of the following: Humanitarian and/or human rights investigations; Issues related to the social, medical, and justice consequences of violence, conflict, and crime in domestic and/or foreign contexts; Forensic psychology; Cybercrime
  • Strong record of teaching excellence
  • Active research agenda with substantial potential for publications and funded research
  • Demonstrated awareness of and sensitivity to educational goals of a multicultural population as might have been gained in cross-cultural study, training, teaching and other comparable experiences.

  • International expertise
  • Online teaching experience
  • Ability to teach forensic science from a critical perspective; experience teaching research methods, biology, and/or chemistry courses for forensic scientists
  • Research and teaching that can enhance department emphases in Criminology, Criminal Justice Studies, Legal Studies, Human Rights, and Forensic Science.


Responsibilities:

  • The position requires that selected candidate, among other responsibilities, will:
  • Maintain effective teaching in the Justice Studies undergraduate and graduate programs, including teaching required skills courses and providing guidance for graduate student research projects
  • Actively participate in departmental and campus governance, including curricular development, planning and implementing departmental activities, on campus activities, and supporting student success
  • Develop and maintain an active research and publishing agenda
  • Advise students, collaborate with faculty in other department programs and elsewhere, and perform professional service to the University, community, and academic profession
  • Contribute to a team of dedicated professionals who skillfully address the needs of a student population of extraordinary diversity–in age, cultural background, ethnicity, race, religion, ability, gender identity, sexual orientation, primary language, life and work experience, and academic preparation–through course materials, teaching strategies, professional engagement with campus life, and advising.


Salary Range: Commensurate with qualifications and experience.
Starting Date: August 15, 2019

Justice Studies is a high-profile department in the College of Health and Human Sciences at San José State University, SJSU—located in downtown San José, CA, “the capital of Silicon Valley.” Established in 1930, the Department of Justice Studies is distinguished as one of the first degree-granting programs in criminal justice in the United States. The team consists of 14 professors, 30 lecturers, 2 office staff members, and over 900 majors.
