Department PPPL Engineering and Infrastrc
Category Engineering
Full-Time / Part-Time Full-Time
Application Deadline

Overview

This position is an analyst position in support of design efforts led by the ITER fabrication team. Familiarity with basic manufacturing and fabrication techniques is required. A good grasp of thermal hydraulics and/or electromagnetics, and analysis of large complex structures is a plus. This position requires extensive experience with engineering simulation tools: multiphysics finite element software and CAD software. An ability to program in computer languages is needed. The job requires effective writing and reporting skills and an ability to present results to peer reviewers; requires a team player to act as the bridge between the design, analysis, and fabrication. Managing tasks and subprojects may also be part of this position. The job responsibilities covered by this job description include some design capability, project skills for work planning, scheduling, reporting, and documentation.

Responsibilities

The assignments include finite element analysis of mechanical and structural components of the ITER diagnostic systems and ports. A strong background in engineering fundamentals is required. A working knowledge of ANSYS, ANSYS workbench or another of the commercial multiphysics simulation codes like COMSOL, NASTRAN or ABAQUS is required. The ability to interface with CAD software at a level that allows modest modification of models and interface with meshing tools is desirable. Experience with electromagnetic analysis in ANSYS or OPERA is a plus. This position is within a team that ultimately has the responsibility to deliver components for ITER. Hands on experience with research and development efforts, laboratory operations, or manufacturing including prototyping would be pluses. Ability to program in a code such as C++, Fortran, Python, or Visual Basic, is required. Experience with analysis scripting languages such as ANSYS APDL is a plus.

The employee should be prepared to represent his/her work in, written detailed reports, and group settings; and interface directly with others performing engineering analysis and with the rest of the ITER team. Liaison with designers and design engineers.

A demonstrated ability to communicate technical issues, resolve conflicts and feedback analysis results to the design team members and vice versa, within an integrated team, is required. Some experience with developing costs and schedules is desirable.

Qualifications

BS in mechanical engineering or engineering physics. Nuclear and electrical degrees may be considered if experience with mechanical or materials science disciplines is demonstrated. The employee's undergraduate academic program shall demonstrate a sound basis in engineering fundamentals. An advanced degree is a plus. A minimum of 3 years work experience is required.
