Postdoctoral Scholar 2018-19

Job description

University of California, Irvine

Postdoctoral Scholar 2018-19

Recruitment Period Open November 1st, 2018 through December 31st, 2018 Description

One postdoctoral position is available in the School of Social Sciences and the Department of Anthropology at the University of California, Irvine. This position is designed to support two on-going, multi-year projects located at the intersection of the history and practice of displaying objects of religious art and monetary value in ethnographic and natural history museums. In recent decades, a shifting political and legal landscape has compelled natural history museums to open their institutional logics in novel ways to interventions informed by the self-understandings of the communities from which these objects originate, not just as kept cultures, but as organizing principles of the collection, housing and exhibiting of the materials and the sociocultural worlds they help constitute.

The projects for which this postdoctoral position will support provide an opportunity to examine anew long held views of what natural history is, and how an institution dedicated to its study and exhibition should engage increasingly diverse publics. Candidates for the position will be expected to have facility in on-going data collection and analysis, including especially in the transcription and coding of audio and video recorded institutional discourse. The candidate will also be expected to assist in the coordination of meetings and conferences related to the supported projects. Depending on the progress of the data analysis, it is anticipated that the postdoctoral researcher will have opportunities to collaborate with principal investigators in the co-authoring of papers for publication, conference presentations and the planning of exhibitions.

Requirements - Candidates must have a Ph.D. at the time of appointment in a relevant discipline such as anthropology, english, museum studies, development, sociology, information/computer sciences, communications, and other fields. Candidates must also have a research profile and experience that relates to the research areas above.

The appointment could begin as early as July 1, 2019 for a period of one year. Renewal is based on performance and availability of funding. Salary will be commensurate with experience.

Application Procedures - For consideration, please submit 1) cover letter (including research skills), 2) a current curriculum vitae 3) a statement of research, 4) statement of contributions to diversity, and 5) three names and contact information for letters of recommendation.
