The Stanford University Fire Marshal's Office (SUFMO) in the Department of Environmental Health and Safety has an opening for an experienced Fire Alarm Technician.
Working under general supervision given by the lead technician or group supervisor, the technician will perform journeyman-level work involved in the installation, testing, inspection, maintenance and repair of fire protection systems and equipment for the Stanford campus and certain related facilities. Assignments are normally received in the form of work orders or verbal instructions. Work is performed independently and is inspected in progress and upon completion for compliance with specifications.
Characteristic Duties:
  • Maintain, inspect, test and repair fire alarm systems and fire sprinkler system monitoring components in accordance with National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) and California State Fire Marshal regulations
  • Maintain computer-based inspection and preventative maintenance records in accordance with applicable regulations
  • Install all materials associated with fire alarm and fire sprinkler systems monitoring components (e.g., fire alarm control panels and modules, conduits, wires, waterflow switches, etc.)
  • Respond to fire system emergencies during regular business hours and off-hours
  • Review plans in collaboration with Stanford Fire Protection Engineers for compliance with California State Fire Marshal and NFPA regulations. Inspect and perform final walk-through of installed systems in new and major/minor renovations construction projects
  • Perform system acceptance test with the “authority having jurisdiction” and/or County Fire Marshal
  • Maintain adequate levels of work supplies. Order fire protection equipment as directed.
  • Plan, schedule and coordinate testing and/or maintenance service with building managers, supervisors and lead technician
  • Coordinate and perform large-scale equipment repairs with Fire Protection Engineers and/or outside contractors
  • Comply with governmental regulations and University and departmental policies and procedures regarding health and safety and must observe and support good health and safety practices.
  • Provide EH&S support as assigned during emergencies
  • Perform other duties as assigned by supervisor or EH&S management
    Qualifications:
  • Required:
    o Working knowledge of NFPA regulations, National Electric Code, OSHA requirements, general work safety procedures, and other applicable regulations
    o Solid knowledge of electrical and electronic theory and practices, usually acquired through the completion of an associate degree in electronics or equivalent certification in electronic trades school, or training as a journey level low-voltage electrician
    o Working knowledge of the theory of operation of various fire protection systems and equipment
    o Ability to repair all equipment encountered, test equipment, diagnose and trouble-shoot problems, and perform new installations, with minimal supervision and technical advice
    o Ability to work on equipment located at high elevations using ladders or lifts and perform moderate lifting
    o Valid California driver's license
    o High School Diploma or GED Equivalency
    o Ability to use PC-based systems; proficiency in the use of the Microsoft Office suite in a Microsoft Windows-based environment
    o California Electrical Life Safety Certification required within 12 months of hire date
  • Preferred:
    o National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies (NICET) Level 2 Certification in Fire Alarm Systems
