Assistant Research/Teaching Professor - Electrical & Computer Engineering

Job description

Assistant Research/Teaching Professor - Electrical & Computer Engineering

Electrical & Computer Engineering Department

Worcester Polytechnic Institute - WPI

WPI invites applications for the position of Assistant Research/Teaching Professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE). This position will initially involve studies related to the development of algorithms and apparatus to control a myoelectric hand-wrist prosthesis, but is anticipated to expand into research in various other ECE topics. In this initial project, we are using the electrical activity (EMG) of remnant muscles in the forearm for simultaneous, independent and proportional control of commercial hand-wrist prosthesis. This research involves development of electronic devices to sense and condition the EMG signal, signal processing/machine learning to interpret the signal, and experimental testing of this new technology (in the laboratory and via a take-home trial of an experimental prosthesis controller). An ideal applicant will have a range of skills, including: the basics of analog design, computer engineering, biomedical signal processing and biomedical data acquisition. Any background related to upper limb prosthetics will be favorably considered.

Directly participate and conduct all aspects of the research. Aid in supervision of student contributors to the project. Participate in and initiate grant applications for funding opportunities in this area and any other areas of interest to the ECE department and the applicant. In addition, and depending on departmental needs, the candidate is expected to teach undergraduate and graduate classes and advise project students in the ECE department.
An earned PhD in electrical and computer engineering, biomedical engineering or a closely related field. Research and teaching experience in biomedical signal processing, biomedical instrumentation and biomedical data collection.
