Degree and Area of Specialization:
Bachelor's Degree required; preferred in Business Administration, Health Care Administration or closely related field.
Master's Degree preferred.
Minimum number of years and type of relevant work experience:
A minimum of 5 years of progressively responsible professional experience with a record of significant accomplishments in managing complex organizations, departments, centers or programs, in an academic medical center environment required. Demonstrated experience overseeing administrative and operational processes and resources as well as an in-depth understanding and recognition of multiple missions of teaching, research, clinical service and community service is required. Demonstrated ability to communicate and interact effectively with faculty, staff, and students; demonstrated abilities in policy development and budgetary/finance skills; excellent organizational skills and experience managing staff; experience participating in committee activities required.
Position also requires strong leadership, management, faculty relations, financial analysis, oral/written communication, team building, systems expertise, creativity, flexibility, collaboration, organization assessment, decision-making, and interpersonal and staff development skills as well as the ability to operate in high-pressure situations. Candidates must also demonstrate a high degree of initiative, operational efficiencies, cost containment, and strategic planning.
License or certificate:
The UW Department of Family Medicine and Community Health (DFMCH) Associate Department Administrator/Director of Central Administrative Operations (Assoc. DA/Admin. Dir) will provide administrative leadership in educational services, research administration, information systems, and Alumni Hall facilities management for DFMCH clinical, education, research and community outreach missions under the direction of the DFMCH Chair and the Executive Team. This position will independently identify problems and develop solutions and direct others in implementation of the solutions. The incumbent will be expected to keep current with new innovations in academic family medicine, make decisions regarding staffing for administrative service areas with input from the Business Operations Team (BOT), and participate in the strategic planning process providing input on prioritizing goals.
The department currently has 866 faculty and staff consisting of approximately 154 paid faculty, 108 academic and university staff, 516 UW Health staff, 77 residents and fellows, and 11 student hourlies. The DFMCH also has 92 unpaid honorary appointments and 15 affiliate or joint faculty appointments. In addition, the department has 339 statewide clinical adjunct faculty and preceptors who provide much of that critical teaching in communities statewide. There are currently 18 UW Health family medicine clinical sites (4 residency clinics; 10 community clinics and 4 regional clinics) statewide.
The position entails a high level of complexity in day-to-day operations and requires a high level of initiative, creativity and personal responsibility. The complexity is evident by the fact that the Department has a $58 million annual operating budget which is organized into 38 cost centers representing clinical operations administration, educational units, service units, research activities and administrative units. In addition, it is geographically dispersed at 24 locations throughout Wisconsin. It is also evident as the individual must work with and coordinate operations between several entities such as the UW School of Medicine and Public Health, UW Health and affiliated hospitals.
The Assoc. DA/Admin. Director works in close cooperation as a member of the Executive Team, and directs the Business Operations Team and Alumni Hall. The Assoc. DA/Admin. Director manages core internal administrative functions of the department working in tandem with the Department Administrator who relates to UW-Health, School of Medicine and Public Health, other department partners and with strategic initiatives.
