UVA Facilities Management is currently seeking a Senior Process Engineer to be an integral part of the Energy and Utilities Operations team located in Charlottesville Virginia.
The Energy and Utilities team is responsible for energy generation, distribution, operation, maintenance, and renewal of the utilities infrastructure, with a strategic focus on safety, sustainability, environmental stewardship, and operational excellence. This team's primary responsibility to ensure the future energy needs of the University Community are realized through the most reliable, resilient, sustainable and cost effective plan. Minimizing fossil fuel consumption and integrating new and alternative energy generation and distribution technology with the existing infrastructure is a strategic element of this plan.
The Energy and Utilities infrastructure includes:
- central heat and chiller plants
- thermal distribution of hot and cold water and steam
- medium voltage electrical distribution and substation operations
- potable water storage and distribution
- sanitary and storm water collection and distribution
The Senior Process Engineer characterizes, analyzes, optimizes, and improves the systems associated with the generation and distribution of thermal utilities (chilled water, hot water, steam) to improve efficiency and reduce operating costs. The incumbent understands and characterizes complex mechanical and control systems analyzing these systems for improvement opportunities, optimizing the system for high efficiency and low cost, and integrating the improvements into operating and engineering systems. The Senior Process Engineer collaborates with operators, mechanics, engineering technicians, engineers, contractors, and leadership, and works independently driving programs and initiatives aligned with the goals of the organization.
The applicants must have a Bachelor's degree in a relevant discipline from an ABET credited institution, as well as a minimum of seven years of experience in a role responsible for engineering or optimization of complex industrial or energy systems. Extensive knowledge of thermal energy generation and distribution equipment and systems in an industrial or energy plant operations environment is required. Knowledge of how modeling is used to drive improvement, as well as the ability to develop, maintain and apply analytical modeling in mechanical or systems engineering is essential. Demonstrated verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills, with the ability to communicate effectively and interact with people of diverse backgrounds is also required. Knowledge of Microsoft office, including Word, Excel and outlook is essential. A Master's degree in Mechanical or Systems engineering is highly preferred, as well a experience working within a trades/industrial based team (HVAC, utility, boiler, chiller, electrical, automation). A Professional Engineering License in Virginia, or ability to acquire PE (EIT and greater than four years of applicable engineering experience) is strongly preferred. Working knowledge of energy and hydraulic models for district energy systems is desired. TERMIS, R, WEb Control and ICONICS are preferred computer applications.
