The University of Virginia's Department of Intramural-Recreational Sports (IM-Rec) is seeking an Associate Director of the Department for Programs & Administration. The Associate Director is charged with maintaining and enhancing the quality of all IM-Rec Sports' programs with a particular emphasis on the fitness and activity instruction programs including group exercise and sports' skills acquisition programs for youth and adults. This student-centered position supervises the Assistant Director of Programs and the directors of all departmental programs that include: fitness, recreation instruction, intramural sports, outdoor recreation, club sports and special events. An understanding and affinity for the college age group and higher education's recreational sports programming is vital to one's success in the role.
The Associate Director supports and collaborates with the Department's Director in the overall administration of programs and assists as needed in overall departmental administration and processes. The Associate Director functions as an internal operations leader, supervising staff program directors as well their direct reports.
A Bachelor's degree is required, a Master's degree is preferred. At least two years of relevant experience is required and preference will be given to candidates with significant university sports and fitness related programming experience. Athletics/Intramural department-related experience: hiring, training, and supervising professional and student program staff; planning, implementing and evaluating programs including development of operating budgets; managing special events; ensuring risk management is applied in all areas of responsibility; and managing and maintaining programs' integrity, variety, safety and customer appeal is of paramount importance. Also necessary is experience assessing, refining, developing and implementing new programs as well as their safety policies and procedures; identifying and coordinating the procurement of equipment needs will also be expected.
The successful candidate will be familiar with report preparation and analyses including participation statistics, activity evaluations, as well as budget planning and reconciliations. The successful candidate will have fiscal accountability experience. Specific experience in organizing and programming revenue-generating programs for students/employees on a university campus is necessary. Knowledge of Microsoft Office is required. Occasional late night and weekend work takes place throughout the year. The salary range for this position is expected to be $65,000-75,000, commensurate with experience.
