Tufts Purchasing is a financial resource for all departments within the university. We support all university departments and staff in a broad range of procurement, related fiscal management and procedural matters. This particular position is part of the Operational Purchasing Group, while servicing the entire operations community, this position has a primary focus of supporting Tufts Dining Services. Tufts Dining is a self-operated food service provider managing a comprehensive collegiate food service program on the Tufts University Medford-Somerville campus delivering high quality, contemporary and innovative food and hospitality services to meet the various needs of students, faculty, staff and visitors in a fiscally responsible manner. Our team operates a progressive dining program for approximately 4000 students as well as responsive retail services and a distinctive university catering program serving the campus community totaling 5500 undergraduates, 1950 graduate students and 2250 faculty, staff and administrators.

The application and coaching of sound business and purchasing practices to realize the university’s financial and societal goals. Work within Dining Services on administration and supervision of the food, supplies, equipment and services purchases. Approximate managed spend in Dining is $7MM. Oversee receiving, storage, inventory and distribution for campus dining centers, retail operations, catering as well as small wares, equipment and uniforms. Utilize the automated production/inventory management system (FoodPro) to provide information necessary to successfully manage the business. Keeps current on equipment useful life and works with senior management on equipment replacement as well as facility renewal and long-range planning. In Dining and within all operations purchasing: support and input into Sustainability Goals are inherent in all acquisitions. Works with department leaders to identify needs, develop product specifications, new product recommendations and sources of supply. Maintains a high level of expertise in markets, advising on trends in cost and supply to obtain the best value for the university. Prepares, executes and summarizes proposal requests. Meets and negotiates with existing and potential suppliers, establishes delivery schedules and monitors vendor compliance. Prepares reports and presents data and recommendations as needed.


Qualifications
Basic Requirements:

  • Minimum 3 to 5 years of purchasing experience, preferably in a food service operation, with responsibilities for purchasing product, equipment and services, forecasting product needs and creating RFP’s.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Business, Culinary Arts, Food Service, related field or equivalent combination of education and work experience.
  • Strong computer skills including MS Office, automated food production planning tools and electronic cash register system.
  • Substantial purchasing experience or food service management experience, preferably in a university or institutional setting.
  • Must be factual, able to communicate effectively both written and verbal, prioritize and work as part of high energy, highly productive unit.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Post Bachelor’s degree study in related fields.
  • Familiar with on-line time reporting, PeopleSoft financials, Blackboard Transact or CBORD electronic point-of-sale system, FoodPro or other automated food production system and ServSafe certified.
  • Outstanding communication skills including interpersonal communication, writing, public speaking and presenting.
  • Successful experiences training employees.
  • National Association of Purchasing Management certification or other industry equivalent is a plus.


Special Work Schedule Requirements:
Primary work schedule is Monday – Friday during the academic year. Some weekends, evening, and holiday work is expected when classes are in session and periodically during the summer. Schedule is subject to change based on the needs of the business.
Travel will occur in the form of professional development, advanced skills training, or to conduct research. Part of Operational Purchasing with work areas located at the Dining Administration Office and Operational Purchasing offices. Will be expected to visit the dining locations regularly as well as attend meetings on all three campuses.
