The University of Texas – Rio Grande Valley is seeking applications for Assistant Professor (Tenure Track) in Applied Saxophone to join the School of Music in the Fall 2019. Primary responsibilities include teaching applied saxophone (undergraduate and graduate), woodwind methods, participate in the development of a Jazz Certificate program, teach courses in the jazz curriculum relevant to the candidate’s experience and expertise, and other courses as assigned by the director of the School of Music. Other expectations include active scholarly presence in the field of music, collegial participation in service activities, and recruiting. This position requires collaboration with the current classical saxophone professor. This position is based in Brownsville and may involve instruction on both the Brownsville and Edinburg campuses. Successful candidate will be assigned the standard academic teaching load for an Assistant Professor.

Minimum Qualifications: DMA, or equivalent, in Music from an accredited university. ABD applicants will be considered if degree will be complete by August 31, 2019. A record of successful teaching at the collegiate level.

Discipline Specific Required Qualifications: Background in classical saxophone performance. Experience teaching and performing in the jazz idiom. A record of active scholarship/creative activity.

Preferred Qualifications: A record of successful undergraduate student recruitment.

Additional Information: UTRGV is a distributed institution. As such and as assigned, the position may require presence at multiple locations throughout the Rio Grande Valley. Work is performed primarily in a general office environment. This position is security sensitive and thereby subject to the provisions of the Texas Education Code §51.215. The retirement plan for this position is Teacher Retirement System of Texas (TRS), subject to the position being at least 20 hours per week and at least 135 days in length. This position has the option to elect the Optional Retirement Program (ORP) instead of TRS, subject to the position being 40 hours per week and at least 135 days in length.
