The University of Alaska Fairbanks invites applications for the position of Dean of the College of Natural Science and Mathematics.

The College of Natural Science and Mathematics (CNSM) consists of the academic Departments of Atmospheric Sciences, Biology & Wildlife, Chemistry & Biochemistry, Geosciences, Mathematics & Statistics, Physics, Veterinary Medicine, Natural Resources and Environment, and the School of Education; the CNSM Division of Research; the Advanced Instrumentation Laboratory; and numerous educational outreach programs. CNSM is the leader in undergraduate and graduate degrees in Alaska as well as pre-professional or licensure programs. In the 2017-2018 academic year, CNSM granted 109 bachelor’s, 74 master’s, 30 licensure, and 26 PhD degrees. CNSM is Alaska’s primary PhD granting college.

CNSM is one of six academic schools and colleges at the University of Alaska Fairbanks (UAF). As one of only a few Land, Sea, and Space grant institutions in the country, UAF is the US Arctic Research leading institution centrally located and at the cutting edge of global research innovation and integrity. CNSM is home to many world-renowned researchers who include both graduate and undergraduate students in their academic pursuits. Many of the faculty have joint appointments with institute partners such as the International Arctic Research Center, the Institute of Arctic Biology, the Geophysical Institute, the Agricultural and Forestry Experiment Station, and the UA Museum of the North.

By the numbers, the College has 124 tenured/tenure-track faculty members, 15 non-tenured/ speciality faculty members, 50 full and part-time staff, 190 student employees, substantial seasonal hires, about 1,200 undergraduate students, and 350 graduate students.

As the chief academic and administrative officer of CNSM, the Dean is responsible for providing leadership for the following specific activities:
Academic Programs, Students, and Faculty: Ensure educational quality; pursue excellence and innovation in education and research, both in and out of the classroom setting; and to recruit and secure the highest quality student body. Oversee recruitment, appointment, promotion and tenure of faculty in the College. Coordinate with faculty and staff in the context of long-range plans to develop annual recruiting plans for the College; ensure the University’s objectives with respect to excellence and diversity of the students and faculty are met and exceeded; promote and enhance cultural, gender and individual diversity.

Leadership and Strategic Planning: Provide leadership that fosters and sustains college-wide excellence in teaching, research and service. These responsibilities include direction and oversight of College programs as well as developing strategic directions of the College in concert with University of Alaska’s strategic plan. As the academic leader, the dean is responsible for the overall well-being of the College. The CNSM dean articulates long-range vision, specific strategies, and detailed administrative and fiscal provisions to ensure the excellence of the College faculty, teaching, research and service programs, and develops a culture of diversity and inclusion. In exercising this leadership, the dean works closely with UAF’s senior officers and other deans to enhance instructional programs and research activities. A commitment to promoting the university as a whole, and participative management and open decision-making are important components of the position. The dean is expected to represent the College and UAF locally, regionally, and globally.

Administrative and Budgetary Oversight: The dean is responsible for the daily operations of the College, to lead the college and to manage and enhance its resources to achieve its mission. The dean is the hiring authority for the College and is responsible for supervising the faculty, department chairs, school or program directors and executive staff. To ensure successful research programs, the dean is responsible for working with faculty to facilitate extramurally funded research to support faculty research activities and graduate training; and for establishing collaborative relationships with institute directors to ensure the success of shared faculty.

The dean is responsible for all aspects of the College’s budget consistent with institutional financial guidelines and for maintaining budgetary discipline within the College. The dean is expected to work closely and collaboratively with the Office of the Provost in developing the budget for all programs and administrative functions.

Other principal areas of administrative responsibility include but are not limited to planning for future academic and research facilities’ needs in cooperation with institute directors and key staff, oversight for non-faculty staffing decisions within the context of university-wide policies and procedures, and the initiation and development of collaborative teaching and research programs within the institution. Finally, the dean is responsible for the establishment of effective internal controls within the College in order to ensure ethical behavior at all times.

Stewardship and Development: The dean has primary responsibility for articulating the philanthropic aspirations of the College in conjunction with the long-range plans of the university. The dean works collaboratively with the chancellor’s leadership team and other leaders across the UA system in planning and executing fundraising priorities and goals. The dean engages proactively with university development staff and others. The dean plays a critical role in ensuring that donor funds are well stewarded, advancing needs within the College, as well as in accordance with donor expectations – and communicated fully and in a timely manner according to UA Foundation and UAF Development policies and procedures.

Partnerships and Marketing: The dean is responsible for enhancing the visibility and image of the college to stakeholders. This includes being responsible for developing positive relationships and managing the College’s engagement in cross-campus, multidisciplinary partnerships that significantly increase opportunities for true innovation in a range of fields. The College’s depth of expertise and celebrated research allows graduates to gain broad skill sets that can be applied to any industry and complement any professional interest. By blending research with education in a variety of disciplines, the College is a leader to meet the challenges of the future.

Candidate Profile
The ideal candidate will be an intellectual leaders among faculty and among peers nationally and internationally, be a strong advocate for the teaching and research mission of the College, an excellent university citizen, and an energetic and conscientious administrator, and be familiar with issues in higher education, particularly issues dealing with science, mathematics, and education.

Minimum Qualifications:
An earned doctorate (or equivalent) from an accredited institution in a relevant discipline (science, mathematics, biology, education, veterinary medicine); a distinguished record of teaching and scholarship that merits appointment at the rank of Professor; three years progressively responsible leadership through academic administrative management experience.

Preferred Qualifications:
An outstanding record of scholarly achievement and an international reputation in the broader sciences community, appropriate for appointment as full professor in one of the College’s disciplines. Excellent research record with experience as a PI of a larger multi-investigator project;
Proven success in promoting and building a diverse community and shares UAF’s commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion of under-represented groups on campus and in the STEM workforce;
An understanding of and commitment to shared governance in a university community and the ability to promote the professional development of faculty and staff;
A deep commitment to student learning and scholarly inquiry and to the mission and values of a land-sea-space grant university;
Strong team-building skills and demonstrated success in the oversight of budgeting and fiscal management as a seasoned administrator and diplomat within higher education;
Demonstrated success in developing relationships with external and internal stakeholders, including alumni and the business community;
Experience with education outreach and e-Learning platforms and methods; and
An understanding of specialized accreditation standards.
