The Department of History at The College of New Jersey (TCNJ) invites applications for a tenure-track, Assistant Professor position in the History of South Asia/Indian Ocean World (with a time period focus between 500 and 1850) to begin August 2019. This position will continue current course offerings in ancient, early modern and modern South Asian history, while expanding our offerings by connecting the Indian subcontinent to links with Southeast Asia, the Middle East and/or East Africa.

The successful candidate will embrace transregional approaches with interests in cultural exchange, religion, trade or migration. Specific responsibilities will include teaching courses in the department's 200-level World History curriculum, as well as introductory and upper-level courses in early, early modern, and modern South Asian history. Applicants must demonstrate the ability or potential to work effectively with a diverse student body. The typical teaching load is three courses per semester. During the faculty member's first year, s/he may apply for a competitive course reduction of one course for the following academic year.

Teaching and research are mutually supportive activities at TCNJ. Candidates should be strongly committed to the teacher-scholar model in a primarily undergraduate, residential institution, to maintaining both high quality teaching and an active and productive research program, and to encouraging and engaging highly motivated undergraduates in intensive, individual work both inside and outside the classroom (e.g., undergraduate research, independent study). Faculty members also have service responsibilities within the College.


A Ph.D. in History or related discipline in hand by August 2019. Expertise in South Asian History, with a focus between the 6th and 19th centuries. Expertise in a South Asian language (Hindi, Urdu, etc.). Evidence of a strong commitment to the education of undergraduates, including experience teaching at the college level in a US college or university.


Research that embraces transregional approaches, connecting South Asia to the broader Indian Ocean Basin. An interest in cultural exchange, trade, or migration. An appreciable record of success as a teacher and scholar.
