The Associate Director for Community Outreach and Engagement (AD for COE) position builds upon the UCCC commitment to serve the State of Colorado and address cancer disparities across racial, ethnic, and socioeconomic populations. The AD for COE serves as a vital member of the UCCC senior leadership team and advises the Director, Senior Leaders, and Program Leaders on issues related to cancer incidence, treatment, and survivorship in the UCCC catchment area. The AD for COE will provide overall scientific direction and planning for UCCC community outreach and engagement activities, including methods for including the catchment area in research, and establishing outreach and educational activities to engage minority and underserved populations. Must devote at least a 50% effort to the position in the first year, with salary support to be provided from the UCCC. In subsequent years, salary support will be 25%.

The UCCC is an NCI-designated Consortium Comprehensive Cancer center with approximately 250 full members engaged in collaborative cancer research at the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus. The Cancer Center is a member of the National Comprehensive Cancer Network (NCCN).

The School of Public Health, celebrating its 10th anniversary, is a collaborative endeavor involving the University of Colorado Denver (CU Denver), Colorado State University (CSU), and the University of Northern Colorado (UNC). The Colorado School of Public Health is the first and only accredited school of public health in the Rocky Mountain Region, attracting top tier faculty and students from across the country, and providing a vital contribution towards ensuring our region's health and wellbeing. Collaboratively formed in 2008 by the University of Colorado Denver, CSU and UNC, the Colorado School of Public Health provides training, innovative research and community service to actively address public health issues including chronic disease, access to healthcare, environmental threats, emerging infectious diseases, and costly injuries.

The University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus is the only comprehensive academic health sciences center in Colorado, the largest academic health center in the Rocky Mountain region and one of the newest education, research and patient care facilities in the world. Currently home to 21,000 employees, more than 4,000 degree-seeking students and two nationally recognized hospitals that handle 1.7 million patient visits each year. CU Anschutz features schools of medicine, pharmacy, dental medicine and public health, a college of nursing and a graduate school.


Public health in any of the following areas: community and behavioral health; epidemiology; health systems, management and policy.


The incumbent will report to the Chair of the appointing department in its faculty appointment and to the Director of the University of Colorado Cancer Center in the role of Associate Director for Community Outreach and Engagement.


The Associate Director will supervise staff associated with activities related to community engagement and outreach as described below.


Specific Responsibilities:

  • Develop an enhanced vision for community outreach/engagement for the UCCC. Establish and lead the Office of Community Outreach and Engagement.
  • Serve as advocate and content expert for addressing disparities in the UCCC catchment area (Colorado) and beyond.
  • Establish and chair a Community Engagement Committee to build relationships with the community and seek input from community leaders.
  • Work with director, senior leaders and program leaders to encourage disparities-focused cancer research within the institution.
  • Works across the university to facilitate UCCC initiatives that complement and do not overlap with other institutional efforts in disparities and community outreach/engagement.
  • In partnership with the AD for Population Health Sciences, develop evidence-based cancer information relevant to the catchment. Activities include characterizing Colorado's demographics, cancer incidence and mortality and concomitant disparities, and identifying areas where disparities are most pronounced. Ongoing assessment is required to ensure current information from year to year.
  • Disseminate UCCC research advances into community settings, to reduce cancer disparities in racial/ethnic minorities and the medically underserved.
  • Enhance cancer-relevant health disparities research in the catchment, including culturally appropriate and adaptive education and outreach initiatives.
  • In collaboration with the AD for Clinical Research, undertake activities to increase participation of underrepresented minorities in cancer clinical trials.
  • In collaboration with the AD for Education, develop community-focused educational initiatives to foster dissemination of research and advance community understanding of best practices for cancer prevention, control, treatment and survivorship issues.
  • Design, plan and evaluate community outreach initiatives to address cancer specific health related risk factors, especially those relevant to minority and underserved populations.
  • Foster research initiatives to address cancer specific issues in the catchment and engage members of the catchment.
  • Develop and maintain community partnerships focused on cancer prevention and detection.
  • Develop systems, policies and procedures to work with state legislators and insurers to more comprehensively and effectively address the cancer-related health care needs of the catchment area. Advocate for public policies to reduce cancer disparities.
  • Identify faculty outside of UCCC membership who are working in areas relevant to the catchment area and facilitate their recruitment to the appropriate Program and to a cancer focus.

Outcomes Assessment:

Evaluation of Community Outreach and Engagement Success such as (examples):

  • Increased enrollment of underrepresented minorities onto clinical trials.
  • Increased uptake of cancer prevention strategies such as mammography, colorectal cancer screening, HPV vaccination, etc.
  • Increased peer-reviewed funding in research to address issues relevant to the catchment.
  • Advocacy at the state level for improved cancer screening, early detection or risk reduction, e.g. tobacco advertising, reduced teen access to tobacco products, tanning booth restrictions, improved access to cancer screening services.
  • New community partnerships to promote cancer risk reduction and/or increased access to cancer preventive and medical care.


  • Ability to effectively communicate to the catchment area community and to policy making audiences.
  • Demonstrated experience addressing issues that affect underserved populations, particularly those relevant to rural residents and underrepresented minorities.
  • Demonstrated effective collaboration skills working with internal and external partners including sponsors, state and local health agencies, community and state leaders, and minority organizations.
  • Demonstrated research expertise in health disparities, by serving as principal investigator of peer reviewed extramural research, preferably from the National Cancer Institute or other peer reviewed cancer funding organization.
  • Experience building, maintaining, and managing collaborative partnerships and interdisciplinary teams in underserved communities.
  • Demonstrated ability leading multidisciplinary teams and mentorship.
  • Knowledge of health disparity funding mechanisms (local, state, federal, foundation, non-profit).
  • Excellent written, verbal and management skills.
  • Ability to develop and execute an outreach and health disparities strategic plan in a collaborative environment, based upon the ongoing assessment of the current and future needs of the catchment area.
