Tenured Faculty Member and Associate Dean for Research, 2019

Job description

School of Information - The University of Texas at Austin
Location: Austin, TX
Open: Sep 5, 2018

The School of Information at the University of Texas at Austin invites applications for a full-time, tenured faculty position to serve as Associate Dean for Research. This person will be appointed in an administrative (12-month) capacity at 0.5 FTE, and will hold the remaining 0.5 FTE of their appointment in a 9-month faculty role, either as an associate or full professor, depending on current qualifications and experience. This will allow the post-holder to continue to pursue their research and teaching at a reduced scale while taking on an administrative role. We are particularly seeking an established exceptional scholar with an active research program and administrator with a proven track record in writing, securing, administering, and disseminating grant-funded research, and leading others in becoming similarly successful. Areas of research and teaching focus are open, but should complement the existing strengths of the iSchool.

Candidates must hold a doctorate degree in a field that is relevant to their area of research and be able to articulate clearly in their application materials how they complement the iSchool's core areas of focus listed at https://www.ischool.utexas.edu/research. For the fullest consideration, please address this fit explicitly in your application.

Application Instructions
Applicants will be asked to provide the following materials:

  1. Current CV that clearly demonstrates your track record in writing, securing, administering, and disseminating grant-funded research, and leading others in becoming similarly successful, as well as an exceptional research record and international reputation of scholarly distinction and accomplishments in the field of information commensurate with appointment at the rank of associate or full professor,
  2. names and contact details of 4 references (no letters are required at this time - references will only be contacted for finalists, and only after consultation with the candidate), and
  3. a cover letter focused on articulating your fit with the UT Austin iSchool and also addressing the following three questions:
  • What innovative funding sources would you target for interdisciplinary research on the human, social, cultural, and technical aspects of information? We are particularly interested in strategies you would use to secure funding from alternative sources such as foundations or firms.
  • What specific strategies would you use to increase the success rate of funding applications across the iSchool and with our partners?
  • What enhancements to the research environment do think are necessary for the UT Austin iSchool to excel and to stand out among its peers?

Applications will be accepted until the position is filled. We will begin to review applications and interview candidates on November 1, 2018.
