Position Summary: The successful applicant for this 12 month research assistant position is expected to develop an internationally recognized, interdisciplinary research program that links phytoplankton biology, biogeochemistry, and physical transport processes to understand phytoplankton-related changes in water quality and biological integrity of aquatic habitats. The successful candidate will be expected to develop this research program through successful competition for extramural and intramural funding. The successful candidate is expected to participate actively in graduate and undergraduate education by serving as advisor and committee member for M.S. and Ph.D. students, and as mentor for undergraduate independent studies. To further contribute to the academic mission of UNC-CH Institute of Marine Sciences (IMS) and Dept. of Marine Sciences, guest lectures and seminars are expected. In both research and academic roles, the candidate should actively engage and collaborate with faculty at both UNC-CH IMS and the Dept. of Marine Sciences. To help fulfill UNC-CH IMS's mission to provide service to the State of North Carolina, the candidate is also expected, upon request, to serve on advisory committees or boards related to managing environmental resources.

Education Requirements: The successful candidate will have a PhD and postdoctoral experience in the area of phytoplankton ecology, biological oceanography, and water quality.

Qualification and Experience: The candidate should have a strong foundation and publication record demonstrating knowledge of phytoplankton biology, experimental design, analyses of large water quality data sets, and coupled biological/ physical processes. Experience teaching, and mentoring/ advising undergraduate and graduate students is preferred.
