Gonzaga University, a Catholic comprehensive liberal arts university sponsored by the Society of Jesus (the Jesuits), is seeking a Dean for its School of Engineering and Applied Science (SEAS). The SEAS, which was established in 1934 and graduated its first students in 1940, produces broadly educated and capable engineers and computer scientists ready to contribute innovative solutions for a better world. The School offers ABET accredited undergraduate programs in mechanical, civil, electrical, and computer engineering, computer science, and engineering management. It also offers an online Master's program in Transmission and Distribution Engineering. The School has a current enrollment of approximately 800 undergraduate students, 31 full-time, tenured/tenure-track faculty, and 12 dedicated staff. The School was recently ranked in the Top 20 engineering programs in the nation that do not offer a doctoral degree by U.S. News & World Report. SEAS students benefit from strong engineering and computer science programs coupled with a Jesuit liberal arts core curriculum.
Reporting to the Provost & Senior Vice President, the Dean is the chief academic, financial, and managerial officer for SEAS. The Dean, in consultation with the faculty and staff, will develop a five- to seven-year plan for the School's continued growth and development that (a) builds on its accomplishments to date, (b) draws on the University's strengths and relationships, (c) capitalizes on its increasing interest in research opportunities consistent with its undergraduate focus, and (d) positions SEAS to be distinguished by dynamic engineering and computer science curricula for the 21st century and beyond. In conjunction with the Office of the Provost, the Dean will oversee enrollment planning and management for all programs in the School. The successful candidate will be one who joins with colleague Deans, the Provost, and other senior administrators to form a cohesive leadership team for the university, supports the mission of Gonzaga University as a Jesuit, Catholic, and humanistic institution and will commit to embody that mission in the programs as well as in the overall operation of the School.
The Dean will position the School as an academic leader in engineering and computer science that identifies opportunities for interdisciplinary collaborations within, and outside of, the University. Interdisciplinary collaborations are envisioned with both industry and academia at the regional and national levels. The Dean will actively support the University's advancement initiatives, including fundraising and alumni relations, and will lead that effort within the School and among its constituents.
The next Dean must possess a scholarly record meriting appointment at the rank of Full Professor and an earned doctorate either in a field offered within SEAS or in a closely related field. The Dean will have proven leadership experience, will have attained a distinguished record in teaching and research, and will lead the continuing process of implementing a living strategic plan that guides measurable progress towards realizing the SEAS vision. The current strategic plan was established in 2015 and includes continuing efforts to strengthen curricula and pedagogy, enrich the student experience, expand research opportunities for students and faculty, improve the teaching/research infrastructure, and expand extramural and philanthropic resources.
