About the Unit
General surgeons at the University of Chicago Medicine focus on a broad range of diseases, including various types of cancer, endocrine disorders, esophageal diseases, bariatric surgical treatment, breast diseases, and more. In treating this wide spectrum of diseases, our surgeons are also trained to use minimally invasive techniques, including robotic and laparoscopic approaches to ease the patient's surgical experience. Our surgeons also work in close collaboration with experts across the hospital to ensure each patient receives the care he or she deserves to achieve optimal outcomes.

Job Information

Job Summary:

This role provides direct health care to patients, in collaboration with consulting physicians and the multidisciplinary health team, in accordance with privileges approved by the credentials committee, to include identification, management, and/or referral of health problems. This position serves as clinical support for Dr. Nora Jaskowiak, the Surgical Director of the University of Chicago's Breast Center, and her surgical colleagues Dr. Jean Bao and Dr. Jennifer Tseng.

Our breast team represents expertise across the spectrum of breast care for both benign and malignant conditions: breast imaging, breast surgery, medical and radiation oncology, reconstructive surgery, clinical genetics, pathology and nursing. Through this integrated approach, patients receive a comprehensive treatment plan that optimizes chances of their survival and quality of life.

Responsibilities:

  • Obtaining medical history and performing physical assessments.
  • Ordering and interpreting appropriate diagnostic tests.
  • Prescribing appropriate medications as set forth in delegation of prescriptive authority.
  • Prescribing appropriate treatments.
  • Screening patients to determine the need for hospital admission.
  • Making referrals to other disciplines as indicated.
  • Participating in the management of outpatients.
  • Supporting faculty clinics.
  • Preparing Breast Conference write-ups on a weekly basis.
  • Placing medication orders in Epic and submitting prescriptions and refills via phone.
  • Responding to patients emails, phone calls, and MyChart messages.
  • Responding to triage phone calls.
  • Performing procedures in clinic – i.e cyst/seroma aspirations, abscess drainages, etc.
  • Assisting with coverage of operating rooms to pre op patients for surgical cases.
  • Assisting with counseling for basic genetic testing and working with Breast Center nurse to perform/order genetic testing.


Competencies:
  • Demonstrated clinical competency, effective leadership and teaching skills required.
  • Ability to conduct physical examinations and health assessments required.
  • Ability to interview and obtain medical information required.
  • Willingness to enter into written collaborative agreement with a collaborating physician upon hire required.
  • Once licensed and as needed, willingness to apply for a mid-level practitioner controlled substance license and DEA number required.
  • Willingness to be privileged and credentialed through UCMC Medical Staff Office prior to start date required.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work independently required.
  • Strong organizational skills required.
  • Demonstrated written and verbal communication skills and strong analytical skill required.
  • Proficiency in the use of computers required.


Additional Requirements

Education, Experience and Certifications:

Education:
  • Advanced degree (or equivalent, if license received prior to July 1, 2001) from an accredited school/college of nursing required.


Experience:
  • Two or more years of clinical experience in a related area of specialty preferred.


Licenses and Certifications:
  • Current advanced practice nurse (APN) license in the State of Illinois or eligibility to receive by start date required.
  • Current registered nurse (RN) license in the State of Illinois or eligibility to receive by start date required.
