Assistant Professor of Psychology

Job description

The Psychology Department at Valparaiso University is offering an excellent tenure-track opportunity for a teaching-focused individual with expertise in any specialty area of psychology. The position will begin in August 2019.  The successful candidate must demonstrate an interest in teaching General Psychology and Professional Development courses. Consistent with specialty, other course assignments could include Abnormal Psychology, Cross/Multicultural Psychology, Physiological Psychology, Research Methods, or Statistical Methods. Our faculty energetically and collaboratively mentor undergraduate majors in scholarly activities.  We seek a candidate who is similarly motivated to include undergraduates in ongoing programs of applied research. While candidates of all areas of specialty are invited, those with broad, applied research interests in Clinical and/or Experimental Psychology are especially encouraged to apply.

Although not required, preferred qualifications include an established history of excellence in teaching, experience conducting research with undergraduates, participating in the scholarship of teaching and learning, or working collaboratively with other faculty both within and across departments. Candidates who do not have these qualifications should demonstrate their potential for obtaining some of these qualifications within their first few years as a pre-tenure faculty member.

Ideally, candidates must have earned a doctorate in an area of psychology by the position start date, but ABD applicants will be considered. Teaching expectations are a 7 course load across two academic semesters (3 one semester and 4 the next). Candidates working toward tenure are also expected to gradually become involved in departmental and university service. Candidates should be interested in working at a university engaged in issues in Christian higher education in the Lutheran tradition.

The undergraduate Psychology Department consists of 12 full-time faculty members and over 150 psychology majors. Our educational approach is student-centered and demands high faculty-student engagement. Individual faculty members hold diverse theoretical orientations, and the department values multiple philosophical positions as does the University.
