The University of Connecticut School of Law located in Hartford, CT invites applicants for the position of Director of the Career Planning Center. The UConn School of Law is one of the leading public law schools in the country. The location offers easy access to the state Capitol, courts and agencies, and the offices of Hartford's law firms and corporations.

Position Summary

The Director of Law School Career Planning Center reports to the Assistant Dean as the leader of the Law School's Career Placement team, and is the senior placement officer for the School of Law. The Director is responsible for planning, organizing, and administering a program of career planning and counseling for law students and alumni.

Duties and Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Plans, executes and evaluates a complete program of career placement and planning, including recruiting strategies, based on needs assessments and consultation with supervisors, students and employers.
  • Plans, implements, and evaluates recruiting strategies to attract potential employers, identifying target areas for developing employment opportunities.
  • Supervises professional, clerical, and student employees.
  • Counsels and advises students and alumni regarding career planning and goals.
  • Advises Dean as well as Assistant and Associate Deans on matters of placement policy.
  • Publicizes information about employment and special study opportunities, pertinent deadlines, and other articles of interest.
  • Designs, administers, and conducts career planning workshops, including interviewing, resume development, job search skills, networking and job opportunities.
  • Responsible for designing inclusive programming that meet the needs of students who have varied and diverse perspectives and programmatic interests.
  • Maintains complete files and detailed statistics regarding career planning and counseling activities, and regarding employment outcomes and prepares reports as needed or required.
  • Oversees the Law School's clerkship application program.
  • Maintains a library of career planning materials and resources.
  • Keeps informed of current developments in law placement trends and opportunities through professional contacts and literature.
  • Plans and writes informational materials designed to help students find desired employment.
  • Collaborates with other units of the law school and university involved in careers issues, as well as with faculty, professional organizations, alumni, and other external stakeholders.
  • Advises prospective students concerning placement opportunities.
  • Maintains career planning database of student and employer data.

Minimum Qualifications

Master's degree in an appropriate field or JD; two to four years' experience in administration and counseling in an educational or other relevant setting; Knowledge of legal hiring community and job search skills; Demonstrated supervisory and administrative capacity; Excellent communication and interpersonal skills; Willingness to work irregular and flexible hours.

Preferred Qualifications

JD degree; Familiarity with the legal employment market of Connecticut and major legal employment centers; Experience in administration and counseling in an educational or other relevant setting; Demonstrated ability to effectively engender trust and build positive, diverse and inclusive relationships with students and employers; Ability to project a favorable image of Law School programs and students.
