Visiting Assistant Professor, Environmental Studies
The Saint Mary’s Environmental Studies Department invites applications for a visiting assistant professor of Environmental Studies for academic year 2019-20, with strong potential to convert the position to tenure track beginning with academic year 2020-21. Ph.D. required in hand at time of appointment. Ph.D. discipline is open; possible degrees include but are not limited to Environmental Studies, Environmental Science, Geography, Public Policy, Social Science fields, STS. Successful candidates will have an interdisciplinary background with experience and/or expertise in a field of environmental policy (e.g. climate policy, indigenous policy, water policy) with a research focus that includes international engagement and/or fieldwork. A strong commitment to teaching in an undergraduate liberal arts environment and demonstrated success in teaching is required. Successful candidates should be committed to supporting a broadly interdisciplinary major. Additionally, successful candidates will be excited to join a group of dedicated faculty who engage students with the sustainable farm, woodlands, prairie, and wetlands on and near the Saint Mary’s campus as well as with local sustainability challenges and the local environmental community. Teaching responsibilities (six-course load per year): Introduction to Environmental Studies, Environmental Policy, Interdisciplinary Environmental Research. In addition to teaching these three courses, the person in this position will share responsibility for leading the Senior Comprehensive Seminar in Environmental Studies and will teach courses in their areas of expertise. Ability to teach Introduction to Environmental Science or GIS a plus. A strong commitment to diversity and inclusion, undergraduate education of women, and service to the institution is expected.
Starting date is August 19, 2019. Classes begin on August 26, 2019.
