Strategic Communications Consultant

As a staff member in Educational Technologies, this position works as part of the instructional design and development team and creates instructional web sites and learning objects for coursework, as well as promotional content and sites in support of department initiatives and programs.

As a member of the Instructional Design & Development team reporting to the Manager of Instructional Design:

  • Creates learning materials in a variety of formats for delivery on the web, including graphic, interactive, video, audio, and animated formats depending on the need
  • Produces web pages, websites and other web-based materials to be used in online courses
  • Incorporates 3rd party web-based tools/products into course materials as necessary
  • Ensures accessibility and usability of produced course materials
  • Provides suggestions and ideas for improvement in course materials
  • Tests and/or develops instructional technology solutions
  • Collaborates closely with team members to clarify needs/concerns/issues in a project

On promotional projects and initiatives where direction is received from the Manager of Learning Technologies:

  • Creates and maintains department web properties
  • Writes and curates promotional content for enewsletters and social media channels
  • Collects and utilizes web site analytics to inform web design and promotional strategies
  • Collaborates with colleagues to write feature stories for print and electronic media
  • Creates custom CSS themes for web applications
  • Promotes events and services through social media and campus communication channels
  • Maintains a professional, and consistently branded image on all promotional materials


  • Creates products and materials for use within centrally supported or third-party technology systems (including CMSs and LMSs), or independent of such systems
  • Keeps abreast of emerging trends and standards in web design and development
  • Performs other duties as assigned


  • Bachelor's degree in web-related field
  • 3 years’ experience in a web-related field

Experience in educational environment


  • Ability to work in a collaborative team environment
  • Ability to follow creative direction and work under deadlines
  • Strong attention to detail
  • Ability to work on multiple projects while producing high quality work under tight deadlines
  • Exceptional verbal and written communication, problem solving, customer service, and interpersonal skills
  • Expertise with fundamental web development skills, including coding HTML, CSS, use of javascript frameworks, installation and maintenance of content management systems (WordPress, Drupal)
  • Good eye for aesthetics, graphic design, usability
  • Proficiency in the use of Adobe products
  • Experience with social media tools
  • General knowledge of principles of user interface design

Primary supervision of this position is received from the Manager of Instructional Design, and direction on promotional materials and projects is received from the Manager of Learning Technologies.
