The senior accountant maintains financial records and ensures that financial transactions are properly recorded. This position safeguards the accuracy of entries to ledger accounts and reconciles subsidiary ledger accounts to the general ledger.

The Sr. Accountant reports to the Accounting Manager and supports areas of financial reporting and analysis within the Division of Facilities Operations and Planning with a primary focus on capital and capital renewal projects overseen by the departments of Construction, Planning, and Facilities Management and operational and labor expenditures contracted through Facilities Management. May supervise support staff and student employees. Responsible for ongoing analysis of construction project budgets, operational, cash flow, month/year-end closing, and account reconciliations. Maintains a positive working relationship with University staff, adheres and supports the University’s Mission, DIRECCT Values/Behaviors, and Service Standards.


  • Prepares complex balance sheets, profit and loss statements, and other financial reports.

  • Analyzes current costs, revenues, financial commitments, and obligations incurred to predict future revenues and expenses.

  • Oversees, mentors, and assists lower-level accountants.

  • Avoids legal challenges by complying with legal requirements.

  • Protects organization's value by keeping information confidential.

  • Updates job knowledge by participating in educational opportunities, reading professional publications, maintaining personal networks, and participating in professional organizations.

  • Prepares and records asset, liability, revenue, and expenses entries by compiling and analyzing account information.

  • Creates financial reports for taxes, regulatory agencies, and stockholders.

  • Adheres to University and unit-level policies and procedures and safeguards University assets.

  • Works to strengthen internal controls with an understanding of Internal Audit impacts and prevention of any control weaknesses. Recommends areas to improve controls and implement as necessary.

  • Responsible for the accounting of complex transactions typically associated with advanced accounting such as verifying the accuracy of journal vouchers and accounting classifications assigned to various records/processing and summarizing financial transactions; assisting in the preparation of financial reports or analysis required by department.

  • Assists in the development of the multi-million dollar, 5-year capital and capital renewal plans with the input of Construction and Facilities Management.

  • Develops and implements tracking policies and procedures as it relates to vendor contract administration.

  • Oversees, analyzes, and evaluates month-end financial and management reporting.

  • Assists in the preparation of the annual operating budget for the department.

  • Assists in the development of long-term financial planning for plant/capital funding projects.

  • Coordinates the fiscal year end closing process and capital project cost tracking.

  • Works with project management staff ensuring proper compliance with accounting procedures including reviewing and analyzing job cost estimates, and funding requirements.

  • Assists management in cost control measures and ensures cost saving options are implemented.

  • Reviews, investigates, and corrects errors and inconsistencies in financial entries, documents and reports.

  • Assists Accounting Manager in any construction related audits.

  • Able to stand-in for the Manager, Accounting in meetings when necessary.

  • Ensures compliance with established internal controls and recommends improvements.

  • Works closely with University Finance, AVPs and Directors of capital construction and renewal and refresh construction to establish and oversee project accounts.

  • Other duties as assigned.



  • Bachelor’s degree in relevant field


  • Minimum 4 years of relevant experience

Knowledge, Skills and Attitudes:

  • Knowledge of generally accepted accounting procedures and principles.

  • Knowledge of budget control methods, policies, and procedures.

  • Ability to prepare financial and accounting records.

  • Ability to analyze, consolidate, and interpret accounting data.

  • Ability to compile, organize, interpret, and communicate accounting data and results concisely.

  • Ability to manage a budget and work within the constraints of that budget.

  • Ability to communicate and to interact effectively with all levels of management

  • Ability to work independently and address department issues when called upon

  • Must have a high level of proficiency in the use of MS Office, including Work, Excel and other related applications.

  • Excellent communication skills both verbal and written required.

  • Audit experience a plus.
