Position: Assistant Professor of Drawing

Start Date: August 19, 2019

Cleveland State University is searching for active, culturally and academically diverse faculty of the highest caliber.  The Department of Art and Design at Cleveland State University seeks a tenure-track Assistant Professor of Drawing. Candidates should demonstrate active professional creative practice in drawing, painting, or related fields and be knowledgeable in contemporary and historical issues related to 2D media. Applicants should display evidence of effective interpersonal and communication skills, active engagement with students, and an interest in leadership opportunities. The Cleveland State University Department of Art and Design offers a BA degree in Art. The Department of Art and Design is housed in the College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences.

Duties:

The candidate will have primary responsibility for leading the Drawing program and teaching all levels of Drawing, including Figure Drawing. Candidate’s secondary responsibility may include teaching Painting, 2D Foundations, Illustration, or Watercolor. Typical teaching load is 16 credit hours per year (two semesters). Other responsibilities encompass undergraduate advising, mentoring of students, and participation in meaningful service on the departmental and college/university level towards strategic goals and priorities. These responsibilities include serving on committees and community engagement.

Minimum Qualifications:

MFA in Drawing, Painting, or related field completed by July 1, 2019. Two years college teaching experience as instructor of record in Drawing or related field. Demonstrated ability to teach observational drawing. Strong potential for developing record of creative achievement in Drawing and related fields.

Preferred Qualifications:

Experience teaching Beginning and Advanced Drawing. Demonstrated ability to teach figurative drawing Painting, 2D Foundations, Illustration, or Watercolor. The ability to address work across disciplines when teaching interdisciplinary and capstone classes as well as to develop a special topics course of candidate’s choice. Strong record of creative achievement in drawing and related fields, as evidenced by exhibition record, awards, grants, or commissions. The ability to contribute through teaching and service to the diversity, cultural sensitivity, and excellence of the academic community.

Salary:

Commensurate with experience and qualifications.

Hiring is contingent on maintaining existing levels of funding from the state of Ohio.
