Professional Research Assistant

Nature of Work:
This full-time, Professional Research Assistant position's primary duties will be to use Drosophila genetics to characterize organismal fat regulation. Specifically, the PRA will characterize through a combination of genetics, biochemical and behavior assays the defects of fly mutants have increased organismal body fat. The position also involves some laboratory administrational work that includes ordering and organizing lab supplies.
Technical and conceptual supervision of research program with weekly meetings; specific lists of items to be ordered and organized; specific training in new techniques.
Training new lab personnel in basic and advanced techniques, including PhD students and student workers; assigning lab duties.
Examples of Work Performed:
Drosophila melanogaster basic husbandry and gentic manipulation; tissue dissection, immunofluorescence techniques. Confocal and epifluorescence microscopy. Micromanipulation of Drosophila larvae for execution of behavior assays. Basic molecular biology and molecular cloning techniques such as: Preparation of samples by RNA, DNA extraction, plasmid preps, gel electrophoresis, RT-qPCR; PCR primer design, cloning and troubleshooting and optimization of techniques. Use of sequence analysis programs. Biochemical extraction and analysis of lipids by Gas Chromatography/Mass Spectrometry. Weekly fly stock maintenance and media preparation.
The candidate for this position will pursue an independent research project, and be involved in analysis of the data generated. The candidate will be required to analyze different techniques used in different labs (or described in the literature), design experiments with the PI to apply the new techniques, and adjust the scope of the project accordingly. There will be regular opportunities for presentation of results in group settings.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Prefer candidate with prior Drosophila melanogaster and/or gas chromatography mass spectrometry and/or microscopy experience. Basic molecular biology techniques, and fluorescence microscopy experience is also highly valued. In addition, applicants should be highly motivated, have excellent record-keeping and communication skills and the ability to work well in a group setting. Ability to work independently after initial training, excellent computer skills, and ability to work with minimal supervision and meet deadlines are important factors, as is experience with general lab duties including glassware cleaning, preparation of solutions and media and general laboratory maintenance.
BA/BS in biology/molecular biology/biochemistry/genetics/microbiology or a related field and significant prior research experience in molecular biology and genetics. Previous research experience with Drosophila melanogaster, basic molecular biology techniques, gas chromatography mass spectrometry and/or fluorescence microscopy. Minimum 2 year commitment, ability to work flexible hours, long-hour days, plus a few hours on weekends.
