PENN FAMILY CARE MEDICAL DIRECTOR
Duties: In addition to providing direct patient care, key responsibilities for the Medical Director include, but are not limited to:
Provide day-to-day clinical oversight of Penn Family Care, including direct oversight of all clinical providers within the practice.
Complete FPPE for new providers.
Coordinate OPPE review every six months when released by PPMC and HUP. Ensure FPPE and OPPE files are housed securely and are available for TJC visits.
Coordinate NP Evaluations with Nurse Manager.
Responsible for the management of clinical schedules. Coordinate with Director of FMOB to ensure OB call and clinic schedule is done ahead of time.
Work with Nurse Manager and Practice Manager to coordinate staffing and access needs to assess additions or deletions from schedule.
Partner with the Residency Director to ensure resident clinical schedules are in-place timely
This should include a focus on acute, sub-acute and routine appointment availability. It should also increasingly consider non-traditional access such as virtual visits and nursing-based care models.
Work with the nurse manager to ensure adequate MA and nurse staffing to provide optimal daily operations including lab services, immunization services, direct patient care during provider visits and nurse phone triage.
Review reports and utilize data to manage panel sizes and session templates with a focus on patient access/satisfaction and provider wellbeing.
The Medical Director will serve as the lead physician for PCSL and CPC+ efforts at Penn Family Care. This includes maintaining awareness of the applicable metrics and deliverables for the given year, working to achieve required practice goals, and attending both departmental and PCSL meetings relevant to CPC+.
Quality & Safety:
Work with the Vice Chair for Clinical Operations, the Director for Population Health, the Nurse Manager and Office Manager to ensure an ongoing process of quality assurance initiatives. This will take the form of work within CPC+, committee leadership for Service Excellence, committee involvement with Safety / Quality as well as individual initiatives outside of this framework.
Create care standardization and department standards with a focus on utilization of technology including functionality within Penn Chart (EPIC) and care registries for population management.
Facilitate personal engagement and engagement of the other FM faculty with the larger UPHS infrastructure for QI on committees such as EPIC operations, etc.
Facilitate maintenance of NCQA PCMH and other important certifications by leading recertification efforts and ensuring compliance with national standards for recognition.
Support residents and other trainees in their QI efforts and requirements through guidance and integration with other practice change efforts.
Review all department SafetyNets. Address those involving providers at PFC. Leave those only focused on in-patient setting. Forward any relevant PPMC/HUP SN's to in-patient senior residents for Safety Huddle monthly. Coordinate with Nurse Manager / Practice Manager for SN's involving staff. Forward SN involving L+D to Director of FMOB.
Obtain monthly SN tallies for All-Practice meeting. Identify one case to highlight during All-Practice Meetings.
Maintain in-depth knowledge of and ensures compliance with UPHS, CLIA, DOH, Departmental and TJC regulations, policies, initiatives, and procedures as they impact clinical operations.
Work with the Vice Chair of Clinical Operations, and other clinical leadership within PFC to review, analyze and continually improve the practice's patient satisfaction scores.
Lead the Service Excellence Committee and develop a road map for patient satisfaction improvements.
Implement rapid cycle change projects to enhance processes that impact patient satisfaction
Respond to patients, as appropriate, based on level of concern and involvement of provider. Coordinate with Nurse Manager and Practice Manager for involved staff concerns.
Respond to insurance companies if complaint originates with insurance provider.
Manage feedback to staff/providers in follow-up to complaints.
Coordinate with Guest Relations as appropriate or needed for support.
Develop and implement strategies to better engage clinical providers and staff in the practice and department.
Implement a clinician well-being initiative
Encourage and monitor clinical provider participation in practice and department-level meetings and initiatives.
Ensure all clinical providers are meeting expectations in accordance with their defined role within the practice.
Measures to assess success on these objectives include but are not limited to data reports and levels of satisfaction of staff, trainees and providers, or measures of teamwork. The Medical Director will actively engage in routine direct patient care with 10% time protected to accomplish the assigned administrative tasks, attend leadership meetings, and collaborate with the Vice Chair. The Medical Director will report directly to the Vice Chair for Clinical Operations and work with the COO and Chair to develop annual goals and budget for the practice.
The director may participate as the department representative to clinical operations meetings and health informatics meetings of UPHS hospitals as delegated by the Vice Chair, engaging other division and department members as necessary to further department goals.
Qualifications: Highly advanced professional discipline. M.D., or equivalent doctoral degree and 5 to 7 years of experience. Management experience preferred. DEA licensure. Ability to practice medicine without restriction or limitation. Board certified or eligible for certification.
