Job Description

Under the general supervision of the Assistant Director of The Disability Resource Center, the Disability Services Specialist will provide needs assessment and interpretation of documentation to determine reasonable and appropriate accommodations, counseling, referral, and provision of accommodations in accordance with Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 and The Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 to students with physical, sensory, learning, and psychological disabilities.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Interprets comprehensive psycho-educational evaluations and medical documentation presented by students to assess students' needs and determine reasonable and appropriate adjustments in accordance with federal law.
  • Provides counseling, prescriptive techniques, strategy training and support services to a caseload of students as assigned by the Director.
  • Monitors student progress and adjusts accommodations, as necessary.
  • Keeps anecdotal records of all student contacts.
  • Consults with faculty, acting as advocate and facilitator in academic accommodation provision and the referral to persons with disabilities.
  • Provides guidance to students regarding on and off campus resources that provide information and referral to persons with disabilities.
  • Trains students the use of adaptive technology.
  • Assist in proctoring and administering exams for testing center, as needed.
  • Mediates student/faculty grievances.
  • Develops and implements learning strategy, study skills, test taking and time management programs.
  • Conducts presentations regarding disability related issues to faculty and staff.
  • Acts as a consultant to other University departments to assure accessibility to students with disabilities to all curricular and extracurricular programs and activities.
  • Advocates for full participation in all university events related to assigned responsibilities.
  • Attends and participates in meetings and university events related to assigned responsibilities. Represents the office and the university at conferences, meetings, and seminars, and to the public, as required.
  • Participates in and receives on-going training through state and national organizations in the field of post-secondary education for students with disabilities and related issues in order to remain informed of current topics and trends.
  • Represents the DRC at campus events such as Open Houses, Accepted Students Day, Red Hawk 411, etc.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
  • Management retains the right to add or change job duties at any time.




Qualifications & Requirements

REQUIRED:
  • Master's degree in Special Education, Rehabilitation Counseling, Psychology or related field.
  • A minimum of two years experience working with students with disabilities at the post-secondary level.
  • Thorough knowledge of disability law, including but not limited to Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act and The Americans with Disabilities Act.
  • Thorough knowledge of specific disabilities and their impact on student's ability to live independently and do university level work.
  • Thorough knowledge of appropriate academic accommodations at the university level.
  • Strong computer skills, including adaptive technology.
