Academic Advisor

Job description

The Academic Advisor provides academic advice and program information to undergraduate students in the assigned College; encourage student retention, progression, and graduation.



  • Providing academic advising services to students in the college/department
  • Utilizing predictive analytics and academic advising resources to make data-informed decisions that positively influence student success
  • Developing and maintaining positive working relationships with faculty, staff, and administrators within and across academic units
  • Assisting students in creation of short and long-term curricular and co-curricular goals
  • Communicate with students regarding academic difficulties they may be experiencing and support students who are on academic probation
  • Conferring with prospective and current transfer students
  • Document interactions with students and work collaboratively with the academic advising community and with campus partners
  • Participating in ongoing professional development activities that enhance academic advising outcomes
  • Facilitating recruitment and orientation activities for the College and representing the College on appropriate campus committees or promotional events
  • Fostering student success through retention, progression, and graduation initiatives


  • Two years of working experience
  • Able to utilize software platforms supported by KSU (Banner, Nolij, EAB, Microsoft Office, and other systems related to student support)
  • Able to deal with multiple tasks or projects at one time
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, takes initiative, teamwork, problem solving, independent judgment, technology, organization, communication (verbal and written), time management, project management and presentation skills
  • Strong attention to detail and strong organizational and follow up skills
  • Strong customer service skills and phone etiquette
  • Some evening and weekend hours will be required
  • Ability to interact effectively with students


  • Master's degree
  • Academic advising experience
