The Department of Pharmacology at the University of Virginia seeks multiple postdoctoral Research Associates to conduct research in the laboratory of Dr. Bimal Desai. The long-term goal of the Desai lab is to understand the role of electrical signals at the crossroads of host defense, inflammation and tissue homeostasis. Current projects in the Desai lab focus on defining the ion channel-mediated electrical signals controlling; (1) cell autonomous immune responses; (2) the contextual programming of tissue-resident myeloid cells; (3) microglial functions during neurodegeneration and acute brain injury. Applicants must have a PhD in the physical or biological sciences, or an M.D. degree with 4-5 years of research experience. The candidates are expected to have a genuine enthusiasm for scientific research, a basic grasp of physical sciences, an inclination to work productively in teams and a respect for viewpoint diversity. Preference will be given to candidates with a conceptual grounding in physiology, immunology or neuroscience. Technical expertise in one these specialties is also highly sought: patch clamp electrophysiology, chemical biology, live cell imaging or molecular biology. Exceptional candidates seeking to transition from physical sciences into biomedical sciences will be considered based on their skillsets and motivating goals.
