Degree and Area of Specialization:

Bachelor's degree in journalism, mass communication, marketing, public relations, English, or related field.

Minimum number of years and type of relevant work experience:

Two or more years of professional experience working in higher education communications.
Highly qualified candidates will demonstrate knowledge, experience, and abilities in the following:
Ability to execute successful communications and media strategies leading to increased visibility that support the goals of WISCIENCE and the Collaborative for Advancing Learning and Teaching.
Initiative, self-direction, creativity and critical thinking.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
Ability to create and tailor content to varied audiences.
Graphic design experience.
Experience working collaboratively and inclusively with diverse partners and constituent groups.
Expert-level user of communications-related computer applications, including word processing, email design, and graphic design.
Experienced-level user of database software and its use for marketing, other bulk email list tools, internal communication tools, spreadsheet, presentation software and project management tools.
Excellent interpersonal and customer relations skills.
Being organized and detail oriented.

Position Summary:

WISCIENCE, the Wisconsin Institute for Science Education and Community Engagement (, is a unit within the Collaborative for Advancing Learning and Teaching (the Collaborative) that collectively partner across school/college boundaries and with the community to increase the effectiveness of STEM education and promote the success of all students, at UW-Madison and beyond. Our programs promote diversity, educational innovation, engaged scholarship, outreach and collaboration. As a part of the Collaborative, our unit provide cross-campus services to faculty, staff graduate students, postdoctoral scholars, and undergraduate students to support the University's strategic goal of excellence in education. A portion of this position may be allocated to other units in the Collaborative with the expectation that such work will require the same skills and be similar to that for WISCIENCE.
The position reports to the WISCIENCE Administrative Director.

Additional Information:

Preferred candidates will demonstrate knowledge, experience, and abilities in the following:
Experience communicating with undergraduate students, graduate students, post-doctoral scholars, staff and faculty.
Experience creating cohesive content strategy, messaging, and designing across website, social media, email and printed materials.
Experience designing email communications that function across browsers and devices.
Drupal and WordPress knowledge; training will be available.
Experience developing and maintaining website content for varied audiences.
Experience in Adobe Creative Suite (Illustrator, InDesign, Photoshop) or similar programs.
Photography experience and strong photography and photo editing skills.
Experience creating, designing, and editing print media.
Project management, attention to detail and deadlines, ability to keep coworkers and other partners on schedule to meet communications deadlines.
Demonstrated success in evaluation and assessment of communication strategies.
A high level of comfort and experience working with diverse and underrepresented communities.
Familiarity with social media platforms and strategies.
