Job Description

Reporting to the Director of Energy Management, the Energy Management Specialist is responsible for providing development and technical support for the campus energy dashboard and utilities systems, capital and infrastructure planning, and energy management programs for campus and associated properties. The incumbent is responsible for supporting all energy reporting efforts (campus, state, and annual reporting) and assists the Director in identifying energy use issues by conducting energy audits. The incumbent assists the Director with developing and implementing solutions, in the form of Energy Conservation Measures and energy projects of various size, affecting systems and equipment, programmatic needs, and operational practices. The Energy Management Specialist assists with professional project management activities for designated projects and assignments.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Oversees the campus energy reports of Utilities System: steam, chilled water, electricity, natural gas, and water.
  • Gathers and evaluates utility consumption information. Provides analysis for energy and water usage data, complex budget, financial, academic, data, systems and resource projects working directly with Director of Energy Management.
  • Inputs purchase orders for utility bills and tracks payments through the Accounts Receivable process to closing.
  • Coordinates the Campus Energy Dashboard building integration. Presides over the appropriate energy and utility information within buildings and partners with departments and managers to present energy consumption to the building occupants. The goal of the dashboard system's integration into buildings is that it will educate building occupants, impact building occupant behavior and reduce energy consumption.
  • Assists the Director in tracking and analyzing current energy usage and developing a site wide energy management plan. Ensure proper environmental conditions with cost effective energy utilization and a primary goal to reduce site-wide energy consumption.
  • Performs Energy Data Management entry for energy performance metrics including: monthly use, annual usage, EUI comparison calculations, and other calculations as necessary to support and track; energy use, carbon emissions, and other metrics associated with energy management.
  • Assists the Director with formulating short and long-range plans for implementing energy innovations.
  • Assists in the coordination of essential energy projects. Cost saving initiatives, efficiency projects, and implementation of energy conservation programs are examples of typical projects. Assists in the energy conservation capital allocation recommendations as well as the rebate recovery process.
  • Assists with the development of scope of work documents for use in Requests for Proposals and Qualifications for both design and construction services. Once proposals are accepted and evaluated, coordinates the scope of work for further development of plans and specifications to be used as when appropriate with construction bidding documents.
  • Assists in the development and recommendation of project schedules and budgets. Maintains detailed records either electronically or in hard copy format of all such project correspondence inclusive of; scopes, budgets and schedules.
  • Assists in the coordination of all end of project activities; obtaining close-out documentation; reviewing final payment applications; reviewing, approving and assembling all as-built documentation; closing out permits; and including but not limited to; start-up, testing, training, adjusting, training and commissioning.
  • Assists the Director of Energy Management with conducting site energy audits and formulating recommendations for facilities improvements, including ASHRAE I and II level audits, feasibility studies and reports.
  • Participates in performing energy engineering studies, including energy audits & feasibility studies, as needed.
  • Performs facility utility analysis and energy benchmarking using EnergyStar Portfolio Manager.
  • Supports the Director in partnering with Facilities managers to establish and implement a comprehensive energy reduction plan that aligns with existing facilities and renewal plans. Recommends controls improvements and adoption of standards and protocols for energy management systems in university buildings.
  • Coordinates with Building Controls staff to develop projects that increase the control, efficiency and operational flexibility of BAS across the campus.
  • Supports the Director to develop and maintain a system of consistent, efficient, and reliable energy management for all University facilities in support of the educational, research, and administrative activities.
  • In collaboration with the Director, creates and maintains strategic relationships with key utilities and interfaces including, PSE&G, NJ American Water, District Utilities provider, and campus energy reporting vendors.
  • Complies with occupational safety and health standards and all rules, regulations and orders. Participates in occupational health and safety training and promotes safe work practices through the selection of footwear appropriate for the work environment, and the utilization of personal protective equipment, when necessary.
  • Attends training courses, seminars, or workshops in order to increase professional knowledge and skills, as required.
  • Applies critical-thinking and proactive problem-solving skills to simultaneously execute multiple projects effectively.
  • Comprehends, interprets, and applies established University, industry, and government regulations, policies, procedures, and guidelines.
  • Is required to learn the software systems used by the Division, which may include, but is not limited to Cornerstone Learning Management, Project Mates Construction Management, Kronos Workforce Management, and Maximo Asset Management.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications & Requirements

REQUIRED:
  • Graduation from an accredited college with a Bachelor's Degree.
  • Three years of relevant experience in energy management in higher education.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in the use of the Microsoft Office suite.
  • Must be able to report to work or work outside of standard business hours, when necessary.
  • May be required to work outside of standard business hours, and is required, unless otherwise instructed by the supervisor or other employee designated by the University, to report to work when the campus is closed or is in a situation that requires a delayed opening or early closure.

PREFERRED:
  • A professional designation of Certified Energy Manager (CEM), by the Association of Energy Engineers.
  • Familiarity with the software systems used by the Division, including, but not limited to: ProjectMates Construction Management, Maximo Asset Management, and Workday.



Salary Range
Commensurate with experience.
