Duties: We are seeking to hire a Research Specialist in the laboratory of Dr. Jay Gottfried at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia. The successful applicant will join a team of researchers investigating the anatomical, physiological, and functional foundations of the sense of smell. The main role of the research specialist will be to process histological specimens of human olfactory tissue, using procedures including (but not limited to): preparing and freezing tissue; sectioning tissue on a cryostat; fluorescent immunohistochemistry; microscope imaging; and image analysis. Flexible hours are requested since tissue collection may sometimes occur in the morning, evening, or weekend hours. Other activities will include creating graphs, reports, and summaries for use in publications, professional journals, and grant applications; creating and maintaining lab manuals; completing portions of grant applications and/or documents; performing scientific literature searches in support of research; and performing other duties as assigned.

Qualifications: A Bachelor's degree in Neuroscience, Molecular or Cell Biology, Biochemistry, or a related field, and 0 to 1 years of neurobiology wet-lab experience including animal or human histology methods (e.g., tissue sectioning, staining, microscopy, imaging), or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience required.
Prior neuroscience research experience carrying out molecular, genetic, physiological, or anatomical studies would be useful but not essential. We are looking for an individual with excellent time management and organizational skills, with an attention to detail, and with an ability to facilitate open and effective communication, cooperation, and teamwork.
