Housing and Residence Life at UNC Charlotte invites candidates to apply for the Associate Director for Residence Life - Student Conduct and Leadership Programs. There has never been a more exciting time to become a Forty-Niner.  Although we are the youngest of the 16 schools in the UNC system, as of this fall, we have the third largest enrollment of all UNC campuses.  Located in the 17th largest city in the country, our campus serves over 29,000 students enrolled in undergraduate, graduate and doctoral programs. 

We are home to 17 residence halls, housing nearly 6,300 students in some of the most groundbreaking facilities in the country with an emphasis on co-curricular learning and academic success. Traditional tower residence halls, suites, and apartments serve to provide options and mobility for students choosing to live on campus.  Learning communities, Greek village, honors, international and academic housing are a few of the options available and indicative of the wide range of choices to be made by Forty-Niners.

The Associate Director for Residence Life – Student Conduct and Leadership Programs provides supervision and development for two full-time, master’s level Assistant Directors, as well as the professional and student staff assigned to their areas. Additionally, the Associate Director will be responsible for providing the leadership and direction for departmental initiatives related to residential student conduct and case management along with student leadership advising and development. The Associate Director is a member of the department’s Residence Life Leadership Team. The Associate Director will also serve as a departmental representative on assigned University and Division of Student Affairs committees.  The Associate Director reports to the Director of Residence Life.

Staff Supervision and Development

The Associate Director is responsible for providing leadership, supervision, and development for the staff in their assigned residential communities.  Specific responsibilities include:

  • Direct supervision of two full-time master’s level Assistant Directors
  • Direct supervision of an Administrative Support position
  • Indirect supervision of full-time master’s level Residence Education Coordinators
  • Indirect supervision of  Graduate Assistant(s) (when applicable), Resident Advisors, and other student employees

Departmental Leadership and Management

The Associate Director is responsible for serving as a member of the Department’s Residence Life Leadership Team which provides overall leadership and direction to the Residence Life unit and shares responsibility for guiding the overall Department.  Specific responsibilities include:

  • Providing leadership and direction for all departmental initiatives related to residential student conduct and case management
  • Setting standards for the Department’s response to care and concern, case management, and community standards
  • Supervision of the Residential Security program
  • Serving as the Department representative on the Bias Assessment Resource Team and Title IX committee
  • Participating in processes enacted to set policies and/or develop procedures
  • Assisting with strategic planning efforts for the Department
  • Assisting in the creation, execution, and assessment of the annual goals

Student Leadership and Community Development

The Associate Director is responsible for working with and supporting the Assistant Director staff and their assigned residential communities to foster an inclusive community that enhances the academic, social, and personal development of residential students. Specific responsibilities include:

  • Providing guidance and structure for the development, planning, and implementation of in-hall residential leadership programs
  • Providing for effective advising and administration of the Resident Students Association (RSA) and National Residence Hall Honorary (NRHH)
  • Facilitating creative and innovative methods for developing the leadership skills of residential students in ways that enhance their overall student experience
  • Incorporating community standards and ethical practices as part of  ongoing community development programming initiatives

Administration

The Associate Director is responsible for working with the Assistant Director staff and their assigned residential communities to ensure that administrative and operational procedures are well managed. Specific responsibilities include:

  • Providing leadership for the development and implementation of ongoing program evaluation and assessment of student learning within assigned areas of responsibility
  • Assisting staff with the interdepartmental development of relationships with Business Services, Facilities, Assignments, and Technology Services staff
  • Contributing to the development and management of the Residence Life budget
  • Ensuring that each residence hall community is effectively managed according to University and Department standards

Crisis Management

The Associate Director is responsible for the management and referral of critical incidents. Specific responsibilities include:

  • Providing leadership for the development and ongoing review of housing response protocols and resources
  • Ensuring that staff maintain awareness of campus response protocols and resources
  • Participating in the year-round duty rotation that provides support to the live-in staff and residential population

Additional Responsibilities

  • Serving on a variety of Departmental, Divisional, and University-wide committees and projects.
  • Facilitating sessions in the Resident Advisor Selection Workshop series, Freshman Seminar, or other courses and workshops (as needed)
  • Participation in SOAR (Summer Orientation) and Explore (Admissions visitation weekends) programs
  • Creating and maintaining liaison relationships with many campus and community partners, including Counseling and Psychological Services, the Dean of Students Office, Title IX, the Office of Student Conduct and Academic Integrity, Center for Wellness Promotion, Student Assistance and Support Services , and the Center for Leadership and Community Engagement

Minimum Education/Experience

  • Master’s degree (ideally in higher education, counseling and/or student personnel, or a related field)
  • Minimum of 5 years of professional housing (post-masters experience in housing, student affairs, or a related field)

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience using Maxient conduct software system
  • Experience with case management with college students
  • Experience with student advising and the development of student leadership programs
