Housing and Residence Life at UNC Charlotte invites candidates to apply for the Associate Director for Residence Life - Academic Initiatives and Staff Training Programs. There has never been a more exciting time to become a Forty-Niner.  Although we are the youngest of the 16 schools in the UNC system, as of this fall, we have the third largest enrollment of all UNC campuses.  Located in the 17th largest city in the country, our campus serves over 29,000 students enrolled in undergraduate, graduate and doctoral programs. 

We are home to 17 residence halls, housing nearly 6,300 students in some of the most groundbreaking facilities in the country with an emphasis on co-curricular learning and academic success. Traditional tower residence halls, suites, and apartments serve to provide options and mobility for students choosing to live on campus.  Learning communities, Greek village, honors, international and academic housing are a few of the options available and indicative of the wide range of choices to be made by Forty-Niners.

The Associate Director for Residence Life – Academic Initiatives and Staff Training Programs provides supervision and development for two full-time, master’s level Assistant Directors, as well as the professional and student staff assigned to their areas. Additionally, the Associate Director will be responsible for providing leadership and direction for Residence Life recruitment, selection and training programs at the professional, graduate and undergraduate student levels as well as guiding departmental initiatives related to residential student academic success initiatives and student learning assessment. The Associate Director is a member of the department’s Residence Life Leadership Team. The Associate Director will also serve as a departmental representative on assigned University and Division of Student Affairs committees.  The Associate Director reports to the Director of Residence Life.

 Staff Supervision and Development

The Associate Director is responsible for providing leadership, supervision, and development for the staff in their assigned residential communities.  Specific responsibilities include:

  • Direct supervision of two full-time master’s level Assistant Directors
  • Direct supervision of an Administrative Support position
  • Indirect supervision of full-time master’s level Residence Education Coordinators
  • Indirect supervision of Graduate Assistant(s) (when applicable), Resident Advisors, and other student employees

 Departmental Leadership and Management

The Associate Director is responsible for serving as a member of the Department’s Residence Life Leadership Team which provides overall leadership and direction to the Residence Life unit and shares responsibility for guiding the overall Department.  Specific responsibilities include:

  • Providing leadership and direction for the recruitment, selection training and professional development of full-time, graduate and undergraduate Residence Life staff.  
  • Serving as liaison with Human Resources and Payroll as it relates to all personnel matters.
  • Providing guidance and structure for Desk Operations, including ongoing review of services provided and staffing models
  • Participating in processes enacted to set policies and/or develop procedures
  • Assisting with strategic planning efforts for the Department
  • Assisting in the creation, execution, and assessment of the annual goals

Academic Initiatives and Community Development

The Associate Director is responsible for working with and supporting the Assistant Director staff and their assigned residential communities to foster an inclusive community that enhances the academic, social, and personal development of residential students. Specific responsibilities include:

  • Providing guidance and structure for the development, planning, and implementation of a residence education program designed to facilitate student success and student learning
  • Providing leadership and effective co-coordination of UNC Charlotte Learning Communities in partnership with University College, including serving on Learning Community Steering Committee
  • Facilitating creative and innovative methods for engaging students in co-curricular learning experiences within the residence halls
  • Serving as the liaison for special residential programs and populations,  including Greek Village, Global Gateways, International House, Levine Scholars, and Niner Choice


The Associate Director is responsible for working with the Assistant Director staff and their assigned residential communities to ensure that administrative and operational procedures are well managed. Specific responsibilities include:

  • Provide leadership for the development and implementation of ongoing program evaluation and assessment of student learning within assigned areas of responsibility
  • Assist staff with the interdepartmental development of relationships with Business Services, Facilities, Assignments, and Technology Services staff
  • Contributing to the development and management of the Residence Life budget
  • Ensuring that each residence hall community is effectively managed according to University and Department standards

 Crisis Management

The Associate Director is responsible for the management and referral of critical incidents. Specific responsibilities include:

  • Maintain awareness of housing response protocols and resources
  • Ensure that staff maintain awareness of campus response protocols and resources
  • Participate in the year-round duty rotation that provides support to the live-in staff and residential population

Additional Responsibilities

  • Serving on a variety of Departmental, Divisional, and University-wide committees and working groups.
  • Facilitating sessions in the Resident Advisor Selection Workshop series, Freshman Seminar, or other courses and workshops (as needed)
  • Participation in SOAR (Summer Orientation) and Explore (Admissions visitation weekends) programs
  • Creating and maintaining liaison relationships with many campus and community partners, including University Career Services, Human Resources, University College, University Center for Academic Excellence, the Office of Fraternity and Sorority Life
  • Other duties as assigned

Minimum Education/Experience

  • Master’s degree (ideally in higher education, counseling and/or student personnel, or a related field)
  • Minimum of 5 years of professional housing (post-masters experience in housing, student affairs, or a related field

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with the development of  intentional residence education programs
  • Experience with the assessment of student learning
  • Experience with the recruitment, selection, training and ongoing development of full-time and student staff
