The Department of Political Science and the Department of Literatures, Cultures, and Languages at the University of Connecticut seek to hire a tenure-track assistant professor specializing in the comparative politics of the Middle East. This joint appointment will contribute to the Comparative Politics program within the Political Science Department by developing graduate and undergraduate courses on themes in comparative politics, as well as the national institutions and politics of the Middle East. The candidate will also contribute to UConn's brand new Arabic and Islamic Civilizations major by developing courses on contemporary Arab culture.

The Department of Political Science has 36 faculty members, over 600 undergraduate students and 55 graduate students, and actively engages in research in American Politics, Comparative Politics, International Relations, Political Theory, and Public Law. Our faculty have enjoyed recognition for their scholarship both nationally and internationally. The department has traditionally featured an active Colloquia series that highlights scholars from UConn and other universities, as well as opportunities for collaboration with the Human Rights Institute, Africana Studies Institute, Asian and Asian American Studies Institute, Women's, Gender, and Sexuality Studies Program, El Instituto, and many others. The Department of Literatures, Cultures, and Languages has over 40 full-time faculty members and offers major and minor programs in Arabic, Chinese, Classics and Ancient Mediterranean Studies, French, German, Hebrew and Judaic Studies, Italian Literary and Cultural Studies, Spanish, Film Studies, and Literary Translation, as well as MA and PhD programs in Literatures, Cultures, and Languages with areas of concentration in Applied Linguistics and Discourse Studies, Comparative Literary and Cultural Studies, French and Francophone Studies, German Studies, Hebrew and Judaic Studies, Italian Literary and Cultural Studies, and Spanish Studies. The successful candidate will be expected to contribute to research and scholarship through extramural funding, high quality publications, and generate impact as measured through citations, as well as aspire to gain national recognition as through honorific awards. In the area of teaching, the successful candidate will share a deep commitment to effective instruction at the undergraduate and graduate levels, development of innovative courses and mentoring of students in research, and outreach and professional development. Newly hired faculty will also be expected to broaden participation among members of under-represented groups; demonstrate through their research, teaching, and/or public engagement the richness of diversity in the learning experience; and integrate multicultural experiences into instructional methods and research tools.
Near-native fluency in Modern Standard Arabic; holding a Ph.D. in Political Science or a related field completed by August 2019; evidence or promise of a strong research/publication record in the field of Middle Eastern politics; and the ability to teach standard and specialized comparative politics courses at both the graduate and undergraduate levels. Successful candidates will be expected to develop some undergraduate courses on contemporary Arab culture where the mode of instruction is in Modern Standard Arabic. Candidates from a wide range of methodological and conceptual perspectives will be considered for the position, but all must demonstrate strong promise in their research program. Equivalent foreign degrees are acceptable.
Preference will be given to candidates with a Ph.D. in Political Science who demonstrate an empirically-driven research agenda that may employ qualitative, quantitative, or multimethod approaches and can contribute to the Department of Political Science's undergraduate and graduate curricula in Comparative Politics.
This is a full-time, 9-month, tenure-track position with an anticipated start date of August 23, 2019. The successful candidate's academic appointment will be at the Storrs campus.
