Primary Purpose of the Position:
This position will serve as an Academic Support Associate and be responsible for managing tutoring activities of the S4 Program to ensure that STEM-major students receive learning support and resources to succeed in assigned undergraduate courses specifically for General Chemistry, Pre-Calculus, Principles of Biological Sciences, Physics and Entry-level Computer Science classes. The position is time-limited until grant funding is exhausted in June 2021.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Coordinate Undergraduate Learning Assistants (tutors) for General Chemistry, Pre-Calculus, Principles of Biological Sciences and Entry-level Computer Science classes. Manage instructional resource centers (tutoring centers). Maintaining Online Course Management System ("Canvas™") in collaboration with faculty guidance and input. Coordinate all tutoring activities including recruit, select and train undergraduate learning assistants and tutors for the support of SCALE-UP Classrooms and STEM major students. Develop tutoring curriculum and conduct training to enhance skills of learning assistants and tutors. Maintain excel database, tracking spreadsheets, tutor training and resource material and tutoring forms. Coordinate tutor-student relationships. Monitor the weekly activities of assigned ULAs/tutors and evaluate their conduct. Works with core Biology, Chemistry, Computer Science, Precalculus and Physics faculty to meet the academic needs of students. Monitor the high-tech studio and activities of tutoring sessions. Support the S4 Program as needed in assessment data collection. Provide progress reports for S4 Program Team, S4 Program Advisory Boards. ASA will report to the S4 Program Manager and work collaboratively with the S4 Program Team. Other duties as assigned.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements:
Must have a baccalaureate degree in Chemistry, Mathematics, or Computer Science or closely related physical sciences field. Familiarity with Microsoft Office Suite (Powerpoint, Excel, Word), Adobe graphics software (Adobe Illustrator, Captivate), and Techsmith Camtasia. Must have excellent oral and written communication skills.
Knowledge skills and abilities:
Familiarity with Microsoft Office Suite (Powerpoint, Excel, Word), Adobe graphics software (Adobe Illustrator, Captivate), and Techsmith Camtasia. Must have excellent oral and written communication skills. Experience in tutoring, supervising staff or coordinating teams. Skills in online course management and assessment data collection are a plus.
Must be highly-motivated with a background in biology, chemistry, mathematics, and/or physical science education, online education, and with experience in student-centered active learning (SCALE-UP) and flipped education methodologies.
